what's your BMI?

I think it's good to know.

Mine is 25.5 according to this BMI site.
http://nhlbisupport.com/bmi/bmicalc.htm

It says I'm overweight. and I'm 6'1" 193 :dunno: I have to lose some weight

mc222 06-11-2004 01:10 PM

Im 6'1" 203....That shit is so far off its rediculous....very inaccurate

Always Dirty 06-11-2004 01:12 PM

I'm 6', 200 and I have to lose 16 lbs to not be overweight. Probably true, but it doesn't take muscle into account. Verdict: dumb.

CLovis 06-11-2004 01:12 PM

i just read this...

"It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build."

makes sense since I am quite muscular and have a regular workout regiman. so keep that in mind.

ju5tchi11in 06-11-2004 01:35 PM

FYI BMI is one of the most inaccurate measurements of lean body mass...

if u want go buy some cheap forceps that are used for the skinfold test. That should be more accurate.

and if u really want u can do the water immersion test... thats the best one... I had 5.53% body fat... not anymore... lol.

yeah BMI is worthless and without any merit. that's why its taught as a basic integral part of nutrition courses at every college around the country.

it does require some amount of common sense and logic to use it effectively, and also some :captobvious:

funny cuz the people that really complain about it are the fat ones. if you were fit, you would know it and wouldnt have any reason to feel you were obese or overweight.

anothercls 06-11-2004 01:45 PM

I just found out my parents are obese....not that I couldn't look and see.

I am 5'10" and 155lbs, gained 10lbs in 3months...

Always Dirty 06-11-2004 01:47 PM

I gained 30 pounds my first year at college. Pretty drastic.

JLai 06-11-2004 01:48 PM

23.6 BMI

5'9 160 lbs

Guess I'm normal. :D

anothercls 06-11-2004 01:52 PM

I have gained 35lbs in 4yrs....but the 10lbs I recently gained was from exercise.

TypeSAddict 06-11-2004 01:52 PM

did I say worthless?... Im a kinesiology major... I am not an expert but in all those nutritional classes that u took... they might also have said it is not a good measurement of lean body mass AS I STATED EARLIER.

I was not saying ur an idiot... I mearly was "For Your Information=FYI" / letting everyone know to not only judge themselves on this BMI for others Body Mass Index number.

I'm almost obese according to that measurement...and im 5'7" with a 29-30 waste and 39-40 chest... so... yeah.

so FYI the BMI numbers u calculate may not indicate the true value of ur body fat percentage. u can also use the things they sell in Sharper Image it measures the resistance of ur body composition to electric current.. depending on that it will estimate... ESTIMATE ur body fat percentage.

good luck everyone.

29-30 "waste" huh. ok, I understand now. :)

haiduc 06-11-2004 02:11 PM

this thing is kinda stupid.

I'm 6'1 and 190, and it says I'm overweight.... but someone can be 6'1 and 137lbs and not be considered skinny. wtf?

ju5tchi11in 06-11-2004 02:12 PM

Like I said... it does not indicate true body fat percentages or anything like that. but it could be a general idea if u aren't a musclar person or someone with a large fat percentage.

a better test is the one that uses electricity... walk into sharper image and hold onto that thing for 10 secs or whatever for free.

the skinfold test is better... calipers can be bought for 20 bucks or whatever... but those are cheap ones not calibrated really well.

then u can go dunk urself into a tank of water and weigh urself underwater with a scale and measure the displacement. for the most accurate measurement of body fat percentage without getting an autopsy

CLovis 06-11-2004 02:37 PM

good suggestions

Red-CL 06-11-2004 02:44 PM
