From my two weeks of running at the gym on the treadmill compared to the 5K Turkey Trot I did on Thanksgiving where it was about 30°F out, I think I am going to continue to run outside, daylight permitting. I got a good pair of cold weather pants from a local running store that I wore during the run and they were extremely warm. I think as long as you dress properly, you won't even notice it is cold out

Thanks dallison

I ran the turkey trot on thanksgiving here in orlando and I think it was about 48 or so when the race started. It was perfect weather. Shorts and a long sleeve shirt and I was fine!

well, the therapist(physical) is going to have me strengthen my core and then work on a strengthening program. i may use some sort of orthotics for my pronation.

I stopped at the local running store and picked up a set of orthotics to support my arch.

so i will do the exercises and see what happens next week

No, I never hallucinated but there was always a lot of day dreaming. The long runs seemed to me as more of mental training. It was hard physically but as long as I knew that I would be running for 1.5-3 hrs. I just told myself to relax and enjoy the view, weather or something to take my mind off of the time.

The marathon was in San Antonio and it was 26.2 miles. The weather was 31 at the start with the sun just coming up and about 67 & sunny when I finished. Besides the waiting in 30 degree temps. at the start the weather was great.

Congrats to all of you who ran the Turkey Trot, looks like some great times out there.

dallison, which orthothics did you get? How long do you have to take a break from running?

Long distance running is pretty popular here in So Cal, a lot of good runners come from this area like Big Bear (Ryan Hall half marathon in 59min. competed in the olympics for the US marathon team)
Wow those are some blazzing fast times, could you post some of you speed/track workouts for us? I remember reading about that Big Bear HS, I think some hispanic kid from there just broke Ryan Hall's mile record last year.

i bought a pair that gave me more arch support. I guess i pronate and my asics don't provide the support i need. So i paid $30 for the ones from my local running store.

the therapist did not tell me which ones to buy, though he did tell me i may need em.

The dr didn't say anything yet about taking a break from running. I may take off december but who knows.

I think I am going to have to take a little break too dallison. The switch over to the treadmill has been giving me terrible shin splints. The muscles on the inside of my shins (lining my fibia) feel like they are on fire. I am going to let this heal up then I am strictly running outside, no matter if I have to look like Ralphie's little brother on "A Christmas Story"!

the treadmill sucks ass, i don't care how cold it is outside, i'll still go out and do it.
I have heard treadmills can give you shin splins

I am thinking that i will continue my reprieve from running for the month. I need to do the stretches that the therapist is giving me(whick takes about 30 min a day) and then start in january

The treadmill is the only I thing that I can really think caused it. I ran as far and pushed my self as much as I do on the treadmill when i ran outside and never had any problems. My Fiance is a physical therapist and said to take to a week off and see how it feels. After that, I'm with you, outside only.

While running yesterday a bobcat crossed the trail about 30 feet in front of me

I know they supposedly inhabit the area but the only animals I've seen prior to that were possums, raccoons, rabbits, and armadillos, etc... It was awesome, I literally stopped in my tracks and just stared at him... beautiful. And it was smaller than I expected, it was maybe 2x the size as a regular house cat. For some reason I would have pictured it to be the size of a mountain lion or something

Yea at first I was really uneasy but he just looked at me and went on his way across the trail probably looking for food. Now, if it was an actual mountain lion, I would seriously freak out and try to run... but he would probably run me down and eat me.

I can feel a little twinge of pain in my knee once in a while. Myabe that is the exercising doing its job

I haven't run for almost a month now. Going to run after work today on a local trail. Hopefully my calf has healed up, I no longer have any pain in it. Will probably take it easy and do 3-4 miles to feel it out. If everything feels good doing to start training for the Pittsburgh Half Marathon in May.

Last time I ran was this last Thursday and did 6.3 miles - so far, the most I've done at one time Averaged about a 7.5 minute mile, maybe not awesome on your standards but good for mine.

Was planning on going today after work but it is gonna be hovering around 32 degrees with freezing rain alllll day. . I think I can wait another day...

Those of you who get bad shin splints etc should look up "POSE running"

Theres a reason why running has such a high injury rate (over 80%)

I just found out about the technique and am going to try to teach it to myself. Much less stress on the lower body.

I ran a 5k this morning. It was a nice slow race for me. I didn't get any pain until about 1.5 miles. This is a bigger improvement from before, but there still is pain after 6 weeks of no running.

It was cold as fuck after 1/2 mile. the wind was slapping us in the face until the 2 mile point. I sprinted the last 100 yards since i held back the entire race. Maybe not running another 4-6 weeks may help.

I ran it in 24:29, slow for me, but it was not a race by any means, it was a recovery run.

After taking about a month and a half off, ran twice during that time, I did around 4 miles last night around the plan I live in, nothing but hills. My legs are dead tired today, but my shins are feeling good I think I may have over did it when i first started to run again and this shin problems may have been a result of that. Going to rest today then run again tomorrow, then running a 5 mile Valentine's Day run on Sunday. Hopefully that goes good.

Any progress on the knee dallison? I did five miles on this past Thursday and another 5 on Saturday. I have to start building up my distances as the Pittsburgh Half marathon is coming up quickly.

i ran 2 miles on sunday and i'm paying for it today. I took the supports out of my shoes and ran on a flat surface. No pain in the left knee, BUT now i have other pain in the right. I am really getting fawking sick of this knee pain.

Maybe i should pick up the gel kayano's that i have on order and see if this helps

I started running 5 miles each day this past weekend. I feel so much more relaxed and healthy. I should've started running sooner, it's almost addictive.

Eh the route doesn't necessarily get boring. I started running a new route about two weeks ago which basically goes along busy roads, residential neighborhoods, and apt complexes and I have my ipod and I'm fine with it, so far.

Plus, same route outside >>> treadmill

Yeah. I hate the treadmill.

I have about four or five different routes. I can't stand doing the same one every fucking day for a month.

Treadmill sucks a big one. I have three different routes to chose from. One route has hills, the other two have slight grades that make for a good workout. iPod helps as well.

^ - Maybe. I used to do a lot of trail running, not by any means safer. But usually less people/bikes/cars
