Yeah, I think I could shave off three minutes per mile for that. On another note, is interval training the best way to increase your speed? It is driving me nuts being this slow, but I guess that is what happens when you don't run for eight years. Gotta keep telling myself to be patient, speed will come.

I don't do interval training, or time each mile etc..., I just time my run and I know the exact distance so divide the time by # of miles and thats who I keep track :0

Which is the same as my process for figuring out my pace. I have read that in order to decrease your pace times faster, it is better to vary your runs then just go out and run the same pace for different mileages. Was curious if anyone had any input towards that.

One on the right for me
That is correct. I did long runs for a while but wasn't noticing much of an improvement when I did races. I started doing sprints for about 15 minutes after an easy jog and noticed a huge improvement.

Yeah, I did intervals on the tread mill at the gym last night using an interval program on the treadmill. Ended up running almost 3.5 miles total. Think I am going to do this at least once a week intermixed in with my "normal" running schedule.

Reading over this thread really makes me want to start running. Question, when you guys run for a period of 40minutes or more, do you carry some type of water bottle? Also a solution for your keys? Should I take my house key off my key chain and just have that in my pocket?

Its cool to see a running thread since im doing College XC and track right now.
Don't carry water, its just dead weight, just make sure you properly hydrate yourself the day/night before and have a decent amount of fluids and food in you, of course you should give yourself a couple of hours to digest. I like drinking those Gatorade Nutrition shakes at the 99cents store
Right now im just getting ready for the 400m and 800m events, just came off of XC with a decent 4mile time of 22:39 not bad but I got mentally worn out and a little beaten up by the end of the season to do better. I'd say my 1mile time is probably down to the 4:20-4:30 range since I did a 4:42 pre-season without too many problems. Im about 6'0" and anywhere from 140-145lbs. Need to start hittign the weights increase my power, strength and speed and get some great speed endurance out of it all.
I suppose i'll do the 5K turkey trot here in Long Beach, just going for a 15:XX right now that would be great but I haven't done one since high school.
Long distance running is pretty popular here in So Cal, a lot of good runners come from this area like Big Bear (Ryan Hall half marathon in 59min. competed in the olympics for the US marathon team)

they have things that you can attach to your shoe so you can store your key in there.
And remember, stretch

No water. Drink before you run. As for the key - I either put a rubber band around it and keep it on my wrist or tie it onto my shoes with the shoelaces.

^ oh you sound like you run from home in your neighborhood or something. I drive to a giant park a couple miles away which is a cyclers/runners dream. So I have to take my car key with me regardless..

I do both. I live in a pretty big condo community that connects to a housing plan, so I have a crap load of roads to run in close to my house. Nothing but hills though, so when I need a break from that I go to a trail that is a few miles away. When I'm there, I just lace my car key through my shoes.

Did my first marathon this Sunday, and I finished!!!!!!!!!!!!! The weather was awesome, a little cold at the start but the rest of the race was good. My hamstrings and calves were on fire when I was done. Only my feet and quads were swore Monday and yesterday.
As for carrying water while you run, I only did that once or twice on my long runs. I preferred to set out water bottles along my route. I consider my long runs to be 14 miles or more. The other times I made sure to start drinking water and accelerade right after I'm done.

Well, did another 5 1/2 miles on the treadmill last night at the gym. I can't wait till it gets warm out again up here. I gotta long wait though. For those of you that run both on a TM and outside which do you think is harder? To me it seems like when I run on the treadmill, it feels like I am having to work so much harder to keep the same pace as when i run outside. Mental thing? Also think i strained my left calf. gotta take it easy for the rest of the week for my first 5K on Thursday.

I would think it is a mental thing. Whenever I tried to run on a treadmill I noticed I wasn't running in my regular form also so
btw how often do you all run? Like every other day etc...? I ran 5 miles sun 5 miles mon 4 miles tues and took wed and thurs off. I plan on running another 4 or 5 miles today but gonna suck cus its supposed to be like 40 tonight!

As I've just started to pick running back up, I have been running three days a week, usually around 5 miles a day. After a month or so once I get a good base, going to pick it up to maybe 4 or 5 days a week. Three days of longer runs with two "easy" days.

I've also just gotten back into running and lifting. For the past 6 months I have been in Boot and then my MOS school, so I was going off their PT schedule, and since it was a busy training schedule there was a surprisingly small amount of running. At SOI we were doing maybe one good 3-4 mile formation run on Mondays.
Anyway, I knew when I got back I'd be getting back into a good workout program. My new motivation was my girlfriend called and her run time is now in the 19s for the 3 mile, where I was faster then her (low 22s) before we left, so I need to be able to keep up with her when she gets done with her school.
Currently my schedule is 3 miles Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and some sort of training, sprints or hills on Mondays and Thursdays. I think I am going to start to step the distance up a bit. It just sucks being outside right now since its been in the 20s or low 30s since I got back. Not sure what I'm going to do once we get snow and ice on the ground, probably find an indoor track. I can't run on treadmills without getting shin splints.

it is pretty suite running in the cold. I ran 3.6 in the 32 degree weather with snow showers and wind.
I still have this annoying pain in my left knee. It comes after 1 mile now and really makes me slow down. I went to the orthopaedic surgeon and had some x-rays done, and no damage was found.
sooo...... i have an appointment on dec 2 to see the physical therapist who also runs. So he will have me run and hope to fix me.
I wonder if my shoes, which have only 200 miles, are the problem

I got a pair of gloves like that also. very handy. On another note, ran my first 5k on Thanksgiving. Was shooting for break 27 minutes. Ran in it 24:36. I extremely underestimated how the race atmosphere would get me going. Gotta look for the next one to see if I can break 24 next!

ran a slow 12 .5 miles on friday. i am able to run real slow for longer distances w/o pain.
I didn't think that you could run until exhaustion. the last 1/2 mile from my waist down, was telling me to stop. I physically had to stop at my destination. I was going to run the 1/2 mile to the house but was unable to.

i ran 4:37 for 1 mile that year...then high school popularity got to me and i ruined it...
