Started running again

I just picked up new shoes to get into running too. I came to the conclusion that it was absolutely retarded for me to drive 2mi to the gym to do 20 minutes of cardio before my workout. Now my run there will be cardio...
The only thing that sucks is that I have a 2mi walk/run home when I am done my workout.

I hear ya, but boredom usually kicks in after 10minutes. I would rather do not enough on a regular basis than do enough and lose my passion due to boredom. I would never go to the gym if I was one of those gymrats that sweats away on the treadmill for an hour.
The weight training that I follow up with is at a brisk pace and I have set it up in a way that it can adequately supplement a shorter cardio program.

I'd love to find a (cheap) way to get that into my winter workouts on the stationary trainer in the basement.

If I had a hottie running in front of me a bit faster than me that would improve my time...

Funny I've stumbled across this thread. For some reason I've had a desire to go running. Not just short trips but more into a distance thing. Dare I say marathon?
I know a few people who trained for one and completed it and they say it is an awesome feeling of accomplishment. I think I could do it, and to understand why it would mean so much to me would require a lot more information than I've got time to tell you about now.
I use to run in the military (they made me) and distance was never really a problem. I would just get into a groove and keep going. Speed or time was never a factor, but I wasn't just granny shuffling along either.
When time did count, which was every three months, I would do 2 miles in about 12:15 to 13:00. Just enough to get the maximum points. And it damn near killed me every time.

i don't get it. i feel real sluggish sometimes when i run. i ran 2.4 miles today(i have been ramping up my mileage) and it was an easy day. i ran it in 18 minutes, so that would be a 7:30 mile. it really felt slow. i can't imagine once i get back in shape how fast i can get.
I have 11 miles in since monday, so that is the reason for a 2.4 mile day. i know i can eek out a 18-19 min 5k, i guess i need to do some speed and hill work sometime

fawk, i ran 1.2 miles to a big ass hill. ran 50 yards up at a full sprint and walked/jogged down, rested for a count of 10 seconds and did it a total of 7 times and ran home. i almost forgot how tough hills were. It was awesome.
i think i have a problem

I go back and forth with music. I can't have a bunch of different songs playing so I usually just find a really long remix of anything, oldies, 80s, etc - something that keeps the same beat. Otherwise no music and I just stare at my shadow or something.

I prefer emo with some Debbie Gibson thrown in with a nice jog.

Solid times, makes me want to get back into running. My college and high school times make it damn near impossible for me to get back into it though.
At least 60% of running and competing well is having the mental capacity to overcome the pain. The other 40% is training and lots of it.

Like Dallison I picked up running again and am in the same routine I was in as I did in High School. My best mile time in HS was nearly 4 min. I'm almost at that level again but about 15 pounds heavier. Sucks. I know if I give up beer and good food it will be gone but that will never happen.

i ran the same race in 94 in 4:47 after running for 2 years. I have had 6 solid weeks of training in preparation. when i graduated high school i probably weighed 155-160. I have been at 145-150 for the past few years.
the winner won it in 4:09 but he was much skinnier than than me. a 15 year old had a better kick than me to finish 2nd. i think he heard me coming up behind him about 100 ft from the finish.
if i run throughout the winter, i am shooting for a 4:30-4:40 next year.
