still have the aching knee and i know it will go away in a couple months, but i keep losing more weight. I am 143 lb with work boots and clothes, so that leaves me at about 137 @ 6'

I eat like a mo-fo also.

Dude, that's too skinny. When I was in high school I was 6' 140 and ate like an orphan but that didn't last long once I went to college. Thanks to running I went from 210 to 175.

My first 5k of the season is Sunday - shooting for under 21. I have been running 21:30 at home, so we'll see.

Just make sure every meal includes at least 1 fried item, bacon and donuts and you will be just fine.

Good luck westas. I'm still letting my shins heal from training for that half. I think I crossed over from shin splint to stress fracture. Its been over two weeks and they are feeling pretty good, but I know if I try to run, something will go wrong.

Yeah, those can get pretty bad sometimes. I had to take about 3 weeks off last summer b/c my shins were killing me.

There is a good stretch that helps me with my shin pain. Sit on the floor with your legs in front of you. Lift your but off the ground with your hands and place your left foot on top of your right foot (with your right foot flat on the ground) and then try to straighten your right leg. Seems to help me - I have a lot more shin pain when I don't do that stretch first.

Came in 2nd in my age group (23 minutes). 33rd out of 200 overall, the guy that won finished in 16 minutes. I have to gmap the course, it was longer than last year and I have been running consistent 21.30 at home. Usually I am faster a race. My first mile was 6.40, 2 mile mark was 14, there's no way the last 1.1 was 9 minutes.......

Checked the course with gmaps pedometer and the course was 3.25 which explains the extra minute. Oh well, running another one next weekend......

How often do you guys change running shoes? I've been running the same pair for over a year now.

I only run one mile as fast as I can about 4-5 nights a week, but I'm thinking of training for a 10k at the end of the year. Figure I may need new shoes by then.

I think the rule of thumb is every 200-300 miles, depending on the shoe. I have over 300 miles on a pair of Mizuno's - I only use them for running - and they are holding up great.

I took my first pair of aasics about ~450-500mi or so. You could begin feeling it a tiny bit.

Current ones are still holding up great though (Gel Kayano's). And I ran the half back in Jan in them and was doing 4mi consistently after that for about 2 mo. straight, some mixed afterwards. I'd say I've put about ~200 into these.

^Nice. I really need to do a 5 or 10k (had the chance to do a few this past winter/spring but never actually did it) but now would rather wait til it gets cooler. It is supposed to be 104 this weekend

I've started doing less distance running (I usually run 4 miles when I run) and started doing more interval training in its place. I'm liking the results

That's pretty hot, we usually don't see much over 90 so I can run outside pretty much all summer. I keep thinking about a 10k also.

How do you do your interval training?

I go to local junior high school track (good now that school's out).

I know there are tons of different variations of interval training out there but I like to mix mine up rather than just do the same exact thing each time.

Of course I will stretch first, then jog about 2 laps then somewhere along the lines of: sprint 1/2 a lap then walk/jog 1/2 a lap then sprint another 1/2 a lap then walk/jog then maybe mix it up and sprint 1/4 a lap jog 1/4 a lap then sprint 1/4 a lap then jog 1/4 a lap then maybe back to sprint 1/2 a lap etc etc etc and to end up I will try sprinting a full lap but am so tired I end up going like 50% the last lap, then just warm down jogging a lap or two. I do it for about 20-30 min. Yea...

ran a 5k this morning in 22:50. I ran thursday harder than i thought and my knee was still a little tender this morning. I almost didn't go, but you never know how you feel until you run.

I started out real slow and picked it up on mile 2 and then the last mile was much tougher since i really haven't run much more than once or twice a week.

My knee is sore now, so i'll be taking care off it this week. but all in all, my goal was under 24 minutes. Now i have a good starting point and will work towards knocking off 2-3 minutes in the next year.

thanks, i have been icing all week and i ran 8.5 this morning with a couple rest points. I am beat. I am planning on a 5k on 8/28 and one in the middle of sept. I also have a 10k in oct that i am shooting for less than 45 minutes. I ran it two years ago hobbling in 48 minutes.

Now i need to find one to do in july........

ran 7 yesterday morning and then 2.5 in the evening. it was hot as hell.

When do you consider yourself 100% after surgery?

Is it where you can exercise and return to your previous form w/o pain in the area where you had your injury?

Excellent! In for an update! You definitely shouldn't be feeling any pain in your knees. I would take it easy until your knee is 100%.

another race and a new pr for the year. I ran 21:18 in a 5k this morning. I would have been 10-20 seconds quicker but i started about a 1/3 ofthe way back in the field since ther were so many people. I felt good the entire race, but i ws always wondering whn the end was. The last 200 yards was an almost all out sprint gallop and i passed a few people. It reminded me of the high school days, were i always left something in reserve and made passes at the end.

My knee still hurts sometimes but the pain is getting less and less. The biking is really helping and i plan on continuing. Now, all i need to do is get under 21 minutes at my next race in 3 weeks.

Do you live around lancaster, because there is a local race this saturday (its called the ox trot) you wouldn't happen to be participating?

I started running regularly this year since February. I decided to make something of it and try this race. I've never ran on a crosscountry team or track or anything so im very nervous, with it being my first ever race. Any advice you guys can give?

I live closer to Harrisburg. I won't be able to make it to that race this coming weekend. Don't eat a ton of food that morning. You can eat a normal breakfast of cereal or whatever you normally eat as long as it's not greasy or real heavy.

When you start the race don't sprint riht out of the gate. It is ok to start in the back and start slowly to see where you are.

I like to start slower and speed up. When i pass people i hang onto them for a while and then in 2-3 quicker steps i pass them, Kinda like a little shot of nitrous. Just enough to get pst them and not enough to wear you out.

There are a million things we could tell you, like try to do your bathroom business at home.

I think thats the thing that worries me the most, keeping a consistent pace. I'm scared i'll be so excited to run that ill get a mile into it and just fail.

I ran 10 miles today, I plan on running 7 tomorrow, 5 wednesday, nothing thur. and a short run on friday like a mile or 2 the day before the race.

Are you doing the hands on house half marathon, or do you stick to 5Ks? I wanted to try that, and maybe possibly the philly marathon this year in fear of never being in this good of shape again, lol.
