Quitting smoking is killing me, Ive gained 5lbs in the past 3 weeks
I decided to quit after two years of heavy smoking (pack a day or more), I've gone cold turkey for about a month and I'm sure I can make it this time. The thing that's bothering me is the weight gain, and for someone who's as conscious of their weight as I am it's really getting to me . I will not get fat again, but every time I get on the scale I wanna go buy a pack and chain smoke to loose it again...
Not to mention I retain water like crazy for like two weeks or so after I go without a cigarette, and I'm home for summer break and my parent's have almost nothing but junk food around the house. So if I get a craving I can't even go grab some celery or a carrot to munch on instead, so its usually some chips or icecream or something
I eat really healthy when I'm living by myself, and I don't eat as much as I should either so that doesn't help if I slip up. I went from maybe 600 calories a day in November (when I weighed 170) to like 1500-1800 and working out a little and I hovered around 180 losing fat and gaining muscle. But now I'm going backwards and its really discouraging, I don't wanna go back to school and then starve myself like I was doing but I might not be able to help it. .
What else can I do besides try to overcome food or nicotine cravings, and continue jogging like I've started doing? Every time I look in the mirror I want to start smoking again =/

I commend you for wanting to become healthy.
Although I've never smoked, I know that weight gain is often a concern of people who stop smoking. Continue to replace smoking with healthy habits, like doing something physical. Nicotine might have curbed your appetite and made your food taste gross, but it also gives you cancer (I won't go on about all the other unappealing and unhealthy side effects).
Do your parents know how much effort you've put into becoming healthier? Perhaps letting them know how important it is for you to stay on track would give them some insight into how you're feeling about coming home.
And by the way, starving yourself only SLOWS your metabolism and forces your body to want to HOLD ONTO food. In other words, you're bound to PUT ON weight in the long run if you continue starving yourself. Oh yeah, and you'll retain water too. If you eat a balanced, sensible diet, and exercise, your body will find its 'healthy comfort zone' in terms of weight.
Keep busy to keep your mind off smoking and food, keep trying to eat right, continue doing something active, and let your parents know of your ultimate goals of eating right and not smoking. You can't control what they buy for their house or what they eat, but it sounds like living with them is only temporary for you anyway.

1. Go to the supermarket and buy some healthy food.
2. Eat more (600 calories, are you kidding me?), exercise more (do some pushups every time you crave a cig).
3. Stick in there.

Eat Fruit. When you crave nicotine your blood sugar drops and you want to eat. So eat something with natural sugars in it that isn't fattening. The suck side is that food will never process as fast as nicotine so you'll have to be patient when you crave. It's better than eating chocolate bars though. And if it's just an oral fixation chew gum.

man to lose weight, get some E (4-5 pills, dont go too crazy), go to a rave and dance for 6-8 hours. I just lost 5 pounds this weekend and I feel great. Minus grinding my teeth from time to time. haha jk
eat fruit and vegetable and drink water, lots of water. it works for me but I am not a smoker so I dont know what to do to kick the urge for that

Its been 18 days for me, and I have gained about 4 lbs. The weight will balance itself out in the long run. You may gain some weight initially, but the payoffs of quitting smoking are 100x better than some weight gain.
You got to remind yourself of the benefits of quitting over the setbacks of habitual replacements to cigarettes.
GOOD LUCK!

Oh, and it's probably alot better to gain 10-15lbs instead of dealing with the risks of cancer...

Thanks guys, I'm still hanging in there. Its gonna be really hard when school starts again in a week since almost everybody smokes, how did you guys get over smoking socially?
And I'm setting my goal also to lose 30lbs by the time the New Year rolls around. I was like 250 in the summer of 06, and I lost about 75lbs in the first year and a half after I moved away for school. It's doable so we'll see

respect man for quitting...
moms a pulmonary doctor and damn have i seen some crazy effects of smoking on those who continue over the years.
as for the food... dont pig out on 3 meals... try not to get bloated, try to have smaller but more frequent meals... ie 4 small over 3 oversized
oh and a 1500 calorie diet of decent food > 500 calorie diet of junk food always.

In the past two weeks Id say I've lost nearly 10 lbs, I dunno if that's something to be concerned about but I look a lot leaner. I'm sure I have some loose skin from being 250lbs, which exacerbates my little gut for sure but I'm definitely getting a lot thinner. If I keep it up I should be thin in no time
oh yea, I've been doing pretty well on the smoking front. I havent bought a pack in over a month and I've had maybe 3-4 this whole month. Just when I was hanging out with smoker friend's I'd go out once and stoge with them. it feels good to go through the day and not have to smoke constantly though.
