Question about Polar Heart Rate Monitor
Hey Guys,
I have a Polar A5 heart rate monitoring watch that has a chest strap that monitors your heart rate. My friends say it is complete crap and does not give you any real idea of how many calories you burn. I understand it is not 100% accurate but it gives you the best guess by the numbers you put into the watch for your personal info (weight, age, height)
This past weekend I played 3.5 hours of tennis. I am 5 foot 7 inches tall, weigh 178 lbs and I am 26 years old
My heart rate started off in the 135-140 range but after an hour of playing it remained in the 155-165 range and went into the mid/high 170 on some rallies. It remained in the 150-165 range for the last 2.5 hours with a break in between for water and switching sides.
At the end of the day the watch said I had burned around 2600 calories.
So it is 2600 calories in 210 minutes. That equals about 12.3 calories a minute.
In my mind that does not seem that unreal. But I think the overall amount of calories made my friends call BS. Do these numbers sound right at all?

I use my polar H.R. monitor to.... monitor my heart rate... and that's about it... It's very accurate for that purpose... but I wouldn't rely on it for calorie lost count... then again... I don't count calories anyway...
