I got a checkup last year, it wasn't a big deal. My doctor said I was in such good shape that I didn't need to see him for 5 more year. This makes me think about going yearly.

^^ Blood work. Cholestrol levels, weight, blood pressure, all kinds of preventative stuff. Very important to get one at least once a year.

I've already had 2 CT scans and a EKG in the past year. Some health problems run in my family (my father died young 29). Trying to keep it safe...

I got a physical this past Monday and I'm in good health, but I haven't gotten my blood or cholesterol taken yet? This is what really matters right? Man, this is kinda scary because I've had these "chest pains" right over my left peck. It doesn't happen often, but when it does happen, I beat the hell out of my chest hoping that it'll go away, which it eventually does. Haven't felt one recently Thank God, but it probably will come back some time.

Well, when u have a pain in your chest, you don't wanna hit it to make it go away. When u go for a yearly physical, they are supposed to take blood, and if they dont, ask them to. Its important to ask lots of questions and make sure you understand what your numbers mean. As for the pains u have, sounds like stress. People are too stressed out nowadays and over stress caused heart attack-like symptoms. Get your blood checked out anyway, its a precaution.

I need a physical soon. I've been having chest pains as well, but I don't think it's my heart, possibly a damaged sternum. But I need to go...My dad battled his heart all his life, and recently he was VERY close to dying. His heart failed for 2 minutes while on a routine fireman drill. Luckily since he was close to EMTs, they worked him right away, if they waited a few more minutes, my dad would be gone now.

Careful out there guys...

Hard part is we all have/had stressful jobs & stress/anxiety gives so many false symptoms it makes it hard to tell what's stress~what's a physical ailment.

That's why it's good to go to a doctor so THEY can determine exactly what's going on...EARLY on...Most of the time it's just a reality check from your body to say, CHILL OUT!

I should go one day. I do know my general things are ok & within normal ranges. Need to loose some weight I know that. I haven't been to a real docter in over 10 years. I'm lucky I don't get sick, & my family doesn't have health problems. Except for eyesight.

i was feeling a little chest pain then felt really faint for a couple of days. Didnt think too much of it. sacred me couple times when I felt like I was gonna pass out while driving. My head got all warm and tingly and felt like I could barely focus.

Went to the 'new' doctor since I change healtcare providers. Went to this local guy in stockton and I told him exactly the scoop. He took my blood pressure and hooked me to the ekg for like 10 secs. Said I was cool and gave me a write up to get a chest xray done. F***er

On the way home from his office I had a really bad episode of almost passing out. Got home and my mom called (of course worried about me to see how it went). I told her what he said and I had another episode while on the phone with her. She wanted me to call the Dr again. I did and he said that he thinks I'm just coming down with something and if I want a second opionion I should go to the ER "but I dont feel you need to do that."

Called up the mom to let her know what the doc said and that he also said my BP was fine. She said "HELL NO" and came to pick me up. I had a couple more episodes are her place while reading some good o' threads. She then took me to San Ramon Regional Med Cntr. As soon as they explained to the receptionist what I was going thru, they came right out and told me to sit in the emergency room bed. They hooked up the heart monitor and I sat there. About 1hr went by when the damn thing start going off. The Dr and nurse came over. Dr had a big smile and thumbs up because he said they rarely catch things on those monitors. (you know the its broke, but when you take it in, it works fine).

Anyways...thing went off a few more times later. He said I had *********arythmnia. He said its not a big deal and a lot of people have it. Easily treatable. My heart was racing up....at one point I saw it at almost 200 beats and then it was pause for a sec or few. He said the pause is when I would feel like I was going to faint. They hooked me up to everything...even did a cat scan on me and sonogram.

I called my dad while in the freakin hosp for 3 days and turns out he takes the same med they gave me. 1 was for the heart rate and the other was for the rythm. they know why his is having the prob but could find a single thing wrong with me that would cause it.

I didnt have an episode after they started to give me the meds and since then. Its been a few months at least. They already took me off the rythnm med and I'm currently still on the heart rate med. The cardio specialist said he wants to trim me off those slowly because maybe it was just a single occurance of me having this issue. So far so good and I even go working out.

You're onto something here.

Thirty three years ago, I developed something called a "pionital" cyst. It was located squarely between, and at the very top of my butt cheeks. A pionital cyst is merely a ganglia (bunch) of body hair that never makes it to the surface. It rarely was a problem, and when it did, a simple lancing at the doctors office brought immediate relief, and it would be ok for another God knows how long. Sometimes a year, sometimes 10 years. Rarely would this growth exceed the size of a pea.

Election day, 2004, I had the worst cold I have ever had, the worst case of the flue I ever had, and the cyst flared up big time. It was now about the size of a pack of matches, and I could not sit down. As soon as the flu and cold subsided enough to make travel bearable, I decided that I would get rid of this thing once and for all, so I located a suergon. I was also a little bit concerned, that what I thought was a lymph node on one side of my neck had not gone down.

Even though the hospital is only 7 miles, 15 minutes away, I was on the verge of tears when I arrived there, and we all know how comfortable the 03 CL seats are. The cyst was now approaching the size of a pack of cigarettes. I was really one hurting puppy, but little did I know that I would have to live with this little bastard for another two weeks or so before it was removed. little did I know at the time (while we waited for anitbiotics to relieve the swelling in my neck) that this pionital cyst would be the least of my problems.

Going through routine tests, it was revealed that I had not only one, but TWO forms of cancer, and to date I have had six operations (all in less than the span of 49 days), and I am still being treated for cancer as this is being written.

So yes, go get checked out. What you don't know can harm, or even possibly kill you!

If you are interested, this whole thing is chronicaled up in R&P, "an e-mail fron Dfreder..." If you choose to read it, I hope your afternoon is free. It is pretty long.

My rules for eating. I have a tendancy for high cholestorol due to diet and stress. Here is what I avoid:

* Beef
* Fatty milk products (Ice Cream, etc), however I drink skim milk or 2% at least once a day.
* Anything high in cholestorol (read the nutritonal facts on the package)
* Stay away from preservatives (anything canned, etc)

WHat I eat a lot of:
* Veggies
* Chicken/Pork
* Fruits

In other cases, arrhythmias are related to an underlying condition, such as:

coronary artery disease
hypertension (high blood pressure)
injury from a heart attack
changes in your heart muscle (cardiomyopathy)
healing process after heart surgery
electrolyte imbalances in your blood (such as sodium or potassium)
abnormal thyroid
autonomic dysfunction (the autonomic nervous system automatically controls functions in your body such as breathing, blood pressure and heart rate.)
bleeding disorders
fevers
stress
Irregular heart rhythms can also occur in "normal, healthy" hearts. Certain substances or medications can bring about arrhythmias, such as caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, cocaine, inhaled aerosols, diet pills, and cough and cold remedies. Certain emotional states can also cause irregular heart rhythms such as shock, fright, or stress. Arrhythmias that are recurrent or related to an underlying heart condition are more concerning and should always be evaluated by a doctor. In most cases, treating the underlying condition will take care of the arrhythmia. If not, many medications and procedures are available to eliminate or control the abnormal heart rhythm.

I suspect what you have is tachicardia ayrythmia, which can be caused by any nubmer of things, and can be a one-time, or chronic thing. Good you got it properly diagnosed, and - since you start with one heart - continue to pay attention to it; monitor it, determine whether you had a "one-time' incident or you may have this as a chronic condition.................

They run bloodwork to determine cholestorl levels (the good and bad cholestorals), liver enzymes, etc.

They will run a urinalysis, in part to determine sugar levels (diabetes)

They do basic checks of the body systems - heart, lungs, etc.

They should ask basic questions that might reveal incipient conditions that are not yet full-blown, such as potential cardiac conditions, lung issues, etc.

They should rund a PSA on your bloodwork, but also do a digital prostate check , which becomes more important as you get older, given the prevalence of prostate cancer.

After you hit fifty, you should get a colonoscopy. (I have the script on my bedside table, waiting for the right moment to make that phonecall..............)

The complete physicial should be a dialogue between you and your physician during which you get to ask any question about your health that you want to ask. Bodies are fallible things, and we all have physical issues, sooner or later. An annual physical, done by a physician that you can trust, gives you an opportunity for early intervention.

I see a specialist for a chronic white blood cell disorder that emerged in my twenties, so I see a specialist about every three months, and run bloodwork monthly. (tiresome). However, that allowed us to track on my pancreatic collapse (type I diabetes) and meant that I was able to "intervene" before any of the complex - and very ugly - side effects of untreated diabetes set in. I manage that fairly successfully, keeping my blood sugar within the conventional boundaries. I also manage a declining pulmonary system with asthma drugs, just work to not let it inhibit my life (flying, sex, exercise, skiing at 11,000 feet out west, etc).

As I've gotten older, keeping a decent diet, working out regularly (under the direction of a professional trainer so I do it right, don't get stupid) all have become more important...... think back to the way I treated my body as a young adult

i know all about those pains.... ive been to the doc 3 times in the last 2 months for it. he tells me its anxiety.... he said there is nothing physically wrong with me. cardiogram came back normal and all my blood work was fine..... those pains started right after i ended a 3+year relationship with my ex girlfriend. i noticed my bad habits (blazin up) isnt very anxiety friendly either. i would sit there and get a pain over my chest. then id think the worst, id sit here at work and check my pulse 20 times a day. im starting to get alot better.... no meds or anything. just relaxin alot more, keepin myself occupied.
