Nuts

Does anyone else eat nuts as part of your "healthy" diet? (Don't get gross on me! )

I eat a lot of almonds, peanuts, and just recently pistachios. I've never dealt with high blood pressure, but nuts tend to have a LOT of sodium. Does this balance out benefits of eating nuts as part of your diet??

Although I don't have high blood pressure, I do have high cholesterol, which is another reason I eat nuts (good omega-3s). My Dr. recently took me off my cholesterol meds. She said I had elevated my HDL enough to create an acceptable ratio. So although my LDL is still high, as long as my HDL is also high enough to create a balance, I don't need the added risks associated with cholesterol meds.

Just looking for some more thoughts on the benefits of eating nuts and wondering if anyone else adds them to their diet.

Change to an un-salted if you must eat them.

I'd change to a protein bar or a shake as a snack with small tuna/grill chicken meals multiple times a day.

The thought of unsalted nuts makes me cringe. But, I suppose it's like anything else - the more you eat it, the more you adapt to it.

I eat salted cashews. I am sure i could switch to unsalted but i don't want/need to yet.

I do eat chunky applesauce without sugar. It's much better tasting and better for you. The only ingredients are apples, water and ascorbic acid.

Almonds are one of those "magic" foods. They should be a part of your diet all the time.

Good to hear that you're off the chol meds. I've heard they can sometimes affect getting a hard-on. Oh... wait. Never mind.

I love nuts

I buy them at organic places and all raw, no crap added to them. Nuts provide the healthy fat you need plus good source of fiber. Best snack ever. (since this is a health section I won't mention how good they are with cold undistilled beer)

I eat a lot of pistachios and pecans. Apparently peanuts aren't one of the healthier nuts from what I've seen

Salt is not the problem, eating too much sugar is the problem, I used to be an alternate physical trainer in the air force and the main problem people had in the air force was that they drank way too much pop, when I got them to just drinking pop only at meals they could basically eat whatever they want.

Keep eating your salted nuts they are fine in moderation

You are correct, and it's because they are not a true nut, but a legume like beans.

I tried to integrate nuts in my diet, but that was not a success. They are heavy on calories and it is hard to limit yourself. I gave up.

Interesting thread. For some reason I always thought macadamia (sp?) nuts were the most healthy.

Was doing some researching and found this on Dr. Sears website:

Here's our list of favorite nuts, ranked by their nutrient density. These varieties contain the most protein, fiber, B-vitamins, calcium, minerals, and vitamin E for the least amount of saturated fat:
  1. Almonds
  2. Filberts (hazelnuts)
  3. Peanuts
  4. Chestnuts
  5. Pistachios
  6. Walnuts
  7. Cashews
  8. Pecans
  9. Macadamias

Almonds. Our "Top Nut" award goes to the almond. Here are the main nutrients in one ounce of almonds (a medium-size handful): 166 calories
5 grams of protein
14 grams of fat (90 percent unsaturated)
4 grams of fiber (the highest fiber content of any nut or seed), unblanched
80 milligrams of calcium
1.4 milligrams of zinc
1 milligram of iron
6.7 milligrams of vitamin E
some B-vitamins, minerals, and selenium

More info in the article. http://www.askdrsears.com/topics/fam...s-ranking-nuts

LOL It is really difficult to stop once you get started. I have the same problem, so I take out one serving (usually an ounce) and put the rest away.

Trader Joe's sells Raw almonds in these little snack packs that force you to stay on the wagon for portion size. Great stuff, easy to throw in a back or backpack, too.
