I had similar problems for a long time. I think the best advice is to get the right bed. It's amazing how we can adapt to bad mattresses and suffer without knowing it. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a good, cheap matress. You get what you pay for. I will say this - the wife and I had a bonus to spend and a 15 year old mattress, so we got a Simmons Exceptional Joseph Abboud and I'll tell you flat out it was worth every penny of the 3 grand and more (it's a king...). I know that was an insane amount to spend, but I've never, ever, slept as well. I seriously look forward to going to bed. Smaller ones seem to start around $900. But, there are lots of good ones out there - don't go cheap would be my advice. You spend 1/3 of your life in it and most likely have it for 15 years. So think of it this way - is it worth $10 a month to sleep well?

Next of course is good pillow, soft sheets, I like white noise (fan) running. I would also not do anything that energizes your mind (exciting TV, or "happy time" ) before you go to bed. You may be the sort that once the adrenaline starts flowing, it may take a while to shut off.

I don't think you'd regret a good bed. Also, I don't know if you've seen a doctor for sleep apnea - you'd probably have many more symptoms if you did, but I just seem to know a LOT of people with it.

update:

so i've been getting better rest (not more sleep, just more effective) lately because i'm a genious lol. before i leave the gym now, i sit in the sauna for approx 30min. losing all that water is draining and i find myself falling asleep a little easier.

i sincerely want to thank everyone for their suggestions.

gracias,
vinny

This man speaks the truth...Probably the safest/most effective sleeping remedy. Your body may not be producing enough melatonin naturally.

If you do choose to do this, start out with 1mg or even 0.5mg, and see if it works, and gradually raise the dosage. If too much is taken you can feel groggy (indicator you need to take a tad less). This stuff works great.

Also what is your carb intake like? When I was on a real low carb cutting diet it was almost impossible to fall asleep? Are you depressed at all?

And rubbing it out before bed doesnt help? Usually I can do that, and fall right asleep? Have you tried using foods with tryptophan (sp?) ?

How dark is your room? IS there any flashing lights? Do you use your bed for anything other than sex and sleeping?

Do you watch tv before bed? Do you wear an eye mask?

30 Minutes is a pretty long time to be in there...I would be careful you aren't dehydrating yourself, losing all the water and draining yourself doesn't really seem like a healthy way of falling asleep easier.

Have you tried adding swimming to your workout routine? Swimming makes me super tired compared to both lifting and running.

swimming is one of my fav pasttimes and i haven't really done any of it in since i move to charlotte. my neighborhood pool is full of kids so i'm scrared of pee in the water and there is no pool at the gym. and you're right, it makes me tired as well. actually, a pool would be the best thing for rehabbing my knee, but what ya gonna do?

I've seen dozens of possible physical causes listed, but the majority of cases of long term insomnia are usually psychologically induced. Could this possibly be the case?

Are you stressed out? If you are stressed, you might want to get a 1 hour massage. This will help you relax and sleep better.

Some health insurance plans cover xx number of (non-medical) massages per year.

did you take the clock out of the bedroom? When I wake up in the middle of the night for biological reasons, I do my best to avoid looking at the clock, if I see what time it is, it takes me at least an hour to go back to sleep.

Maybe I'm just crazy?

crazy pills FTW

I bought the 3mg pills and just use them as needed (maybe once a week). I've used a couple - man these put me down. About 20 minutes after taking one, I'm out. Sleep through the night too. I'd be careful if you could not get at least 8 hrs of rest though.

I have the same problem, but mine is brought on by my shoulder impingement. I naturally sleep on my sides, but after a hard shoulder/chest workout its painful to sleep on my right side for about 2 nights.......ugh

Since really hitting it hard in the gym for the past few months my sleep has really sucked

one would figure that working out extra hard at the gym would allow you to sleep better. but just like me, that's not always the case
