Going to a commercial gym yeah you'll see a lot of beefy dudes and freak strength. I go to LA Fitness saw the guys aren't pro strong but they're some dudes that are like damn. What have you guys seen? I thought a dude doing a pullup with a 120lb dumbbell strapped on was pretty crazy strong. He did it once but yes he got his chin over the bar.

There was a big kid on our HS district (Llano HS) who could squat over 600 lbs. Texas state records don't have him for squat, but they have him for dead lift at 680. Watching the bar bend over the back of a 16-18 year old was always pretty .

Archives of the District 27-3A All-District team listed him as 270/6'0" his senior year. He played running back and full back because of his sheer power.

I've seen people lift serious weight, but they ALL had about 3 inch ROM...

and another thing, when you see someone benching tremendous weight, but they arch the fsck out of their back.... does that count?

Looks kind of unnatural to me. IMO I don't think it should count..

I'll check him out. I wonder what his 40 time was.

Yeah that's a legit powerlifter bench press. Not many people at commercial gyms do it. I've tried it before. The legs deep under really help the leg drive and help avoid kicking out which is not ideal. I usually keep my ass touching. Plus he probably has the bar touch under his chest rather than on it. And yes you still feel it in your chest. On YouTube a dude named Alan Thrall has really down to earth explanations on how to do the proper method of compound lifts - bench, squat, deadlift, bar row. I STRONGLY recommend anyone that's lifting to check them out.

Provably 5.4 or so. He was slow. He played tackle on defense.

But if you arch your back like that, aren't you activating muscles that don't normally get activated with a motion like that? Hence you are, in a way, "cheating" so you can lift more weight?

If you take the feet out of the equation, guaranteed he won't be able to lift that much

Well your back has a part in your bench pressing always. If you have a stronger back you can bench press more. Sure it will be harder without arching. It's a different method not "cheating". If you felt it better and benefited more in your chest benching like this with heavier weight vs traditional method, why limit yourself? Everyone's body is different anyways. Some people benefit with a slightly closer grip, some with hypertrophy vs power lifting, some vice versa.

I don't see what the big deal is with his feet? Don't you all bench press with your feet on the ground. You do use leg drive when you bench unless you do that shit where you have your feet up.

i dont drive my legs.

because I know that my legs will be pushing the weight instead of my chest and tri's

but like you said; we all have our own ways to do things. it's something I was taught and it makes sense to me. driving the legs will allow you to lift more because you're using your legs.

Your legs have no direct means to move the weight. All of the work done on the weight is between the hands and where the back touches the bench. Driving the legs will only change the tension in your back muscles and provide the potential for more leverage. Whether or not your upper body can use that leverage is another thing.

BTW I've worked out this one dude maybe 5'10 220. 2 plates warm up, 3 plates like 10x, 4 plates once or twice. He does more after but strips off weight.

Well, an oh-shet moment was when I saw a muscle-bound white dude with the words "seafood" in Chinese characters tattooed on his arm.

Well just IMO it's like that kipping thing you do in Crossfit. You're activating extra muscles that don't really "belong" in the exercise so you can get a higher number of reps and/or weight.

I've never tried arching my back like that while doing a bench press, but I'm willing to bet you activate your lats at least when you're doing it like that At least for stability/leverage. I could squat a lot more weight if I really worked my hips into it, but...

Just my

Well the kipping pullups are more for a conditioning aspect vs traditional style as you can get more reps while kipping. I see where you're going but not quite the same thing. BTW, your lats help you stabilize on a bench press even when you don't arch your back.

I don't understand how you can "cheat" at squatting as long as your legs are going below parallel to the ground. If you go low enough how do you squat more by using your hips?

Here's the video I was talking about regarding bench press. He does discuss the differences and doesn't use medical jargon.

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...T39Fwy6qJdkPcQ

And here's the one about leg drive in bench press

I'm sure he was Mexican, and he hadn't bought a truck yet. What else was he supposed to do?

Okay...gotta ask: Is it healthy to arch your back like that to bench-press?

That can't be good for you.

Well as far as possibility of injuries I really don't think it's that bad.. Contortionists do it all the time But I think since you're not really putting a load on the spine when you're on a bench like that, then the impact isn't so bad.

Of course I'd only be a doctor of broscience, so...

I don't arch my back anywhere near that guy so I couldn't tell you but I don't feel any strain in mine even when lifting heavy.

Not sure if this is really "holy shit" strength. It's a lot more than I can bench, but I'm not sure if the point of the thread would require more plates Either way...

5 plates, but check out the girl in the back. She probably needed to change her undies afterwards

That's Mark Bell. He is looking to get a 600lb bench press soon. Guy is pretty powerful and funny as shit. Entertaining channels. And yes 5 plates on anything is pretty holy shit.
