Started running again

well, after 13 years of not running, i decided that i needed to do something with my time. I used to run in a lot of 5k's and a few 10k's. i used to average....... you know i can't remember what i averaged. it was prob 19-20 min for a 5k i guess.

so i have an older pair of shoes i am using until i can use my sports authority 25% off on a pair of asics.

and i feel sore today

that is all

Do you have a goal - weight loss, cardio improvement, etc. - for this?

well, i really am not doing this for health issues. I am the same weight i was in high school. My blood pressure an dheart rate are excellent. I guess i miss part of the high from running. Since i bought the house i have done crap to stay athletic.

I am at a great weight to start up. 145-150 lbs. i still eat healthy for the most part.

i was pretty decent when i competed after high school. i usually placed in the top 3 in my age group. it is something that i was decent at.

I ran about 1.75-2 miles yesterday at about a 8 1/2 min mile pace, maybe a little quicker.
it felt real good after 13 years but i need to exercise more.

I am looking to get back down to a 6.5-7 min mile. and maybe a 5:30 single mile, for those 1 mile races

I just started again yesterday after 6+ months off. I was getting grouchy all the time and now I'm like a new person. Starting off is hard though. I ran at an 8:50 pace and barely finished. Depressing. I used to do 10 miles easily at a 6:20 pace but if I can stick with it through this first week it should get easier.

soccer summer conditioning FTL. thing is i can do 5:50 miles... but can only run probably 3 miles straight. ive been averaging 9 minutes for 1.5 miles - from my house to parents office.

then a .5 miles walk back and a 6 minute mile to finish it off... and imo when you look at shoes... go for a wide base and i dunno, when i used nike shox, i sprained and rolled my ankle a least 5 times a month. using pumas and addidas now

down to 7.5 min mile ran 2.8miles. I could have gone more but no need yet to overdo it.

i think i can get down to a 6-6:15 mile. i will start some conditioning in a month. the usual hills, sprints etc.

wow, i could never do long distance running of any sort. i personally find it super boring to just run. i do, however, have mad respect for people who do it tho, especially triathletes. they've got some insane vo2 max capacity!

me and a few buddies have added "obstacle course running" into our training. basically, we look like n00bs trying parkour. haha. we have no parkour training at all so i don't claim to know a thing about it. we just make up an obstacle course out of the beach or park or wherever with benches, picnic tables, stairs, etc. and we just run/leap/roll/climb/whatever to get to the end. pace is at full sprint. our lungs are seared and the whole body feels like jello but its an awesome feeling.

I like running. I started running frequently after a few years of just off and on exercise. Soccer was by far the best for training - harder to get down to the level I was at without playing.

ran 6 miles on sunday in 43 minutes. so i managed to get my time down to about a 7 minute mile depending where i run.

i have been icing up my feet and ankles more than i ever have in my life. I am learning what limitations i have in training.

I have a 5k in sept and then a week later a 1 miler. I hope to get under 5 minutes for that mile.

and then another 10k in oct.

this feels great

eating before sports is terrible, if you stretch for about 10 minutes and hold your stretches and don't bounce

I'm also running now... Played soccer for 15 yrs of my life then went to college, drank beer, got a beer belly, and now my goal is to lose it. I have been running pretty much everyday now... first 2 miles and now for the past month or two I've been running 3 miles. I feel like I can go even more, like 4 miles or so, but the trail I run on is only 3 miles lol. I guess I will haev to find some route in my neighborhood that is 4 miles. And I have definately noticed a smaller belly Btw I love my saucony's and always run with my ipod.

does the ipod take your mind off of the "only 3 miles to go" ?

^ ehhe. The ipod takes my mind off daily things and just gets me zoned in on what I'm doing at that moment (running) and therefore lets me run longer and not get bored, imo.

I don't really think about '3 miles left to go' because I know I can go the distance since my endurance has gone up and since I know it's great for me healthwise.

stretch like hell, you should be holding the stretch and not bouncing when you stretch. when you run, your back gets stronger after a while. It should take you about 10-15 minutes before and after your workout.

make sure you have good shoes when you run

You know what would be a great invention? An elliptical that goes somewhere. You could get your cardio and not have to stay in one place while doing it.

Or you could ride a bike.

The bike is a good idea....The traveling elliptical, hmm...I do an hour on one and it says I did about a mile and a half....Not the fasted mode of transportation....

Its distance is way off. You could easily walk 3 miles in an hour.

Not if I walked like I was doing the elliptical, which is more horizontal the vertical...

Ah, that's the opposite of Presinth.

Get a fitness bike -- straight handlebars, slightly wider tires -- and you'll be able to get your cardio without the boredom for the majority of the year.

go to a running store and get fitted for a correct pair of shoes if you havent. its better to go spend a couple more bucks for a good pair and not get injured in the long run

Good shoes are a must. Running was the first thing I started doing when losing weight after about 6 years of inactivity. I now run and cycle regularly.

In my early days I was more into sprinting rather than distance but distance running is fun. I haven't been timing myself but my best guess is I avg ~20mins for a 5k and ~50mins for a 10k.

oh yeah shoes are a must. i purchased a pair of gel-nimbus 14's from sports authority and they are working well. i am going to put a hundred or so miles on em before i go and get fitted for my next pair. I totally forgot what wear pattern i am puttting on my shoes, and it may have changed. I know my next pair will be asics again, but not sure of the model
