How long till strength is back after 3.5 year layoff?
It's been about 3.5 years since I stopped lifting and I'm curious how long it usually takes to get your strength back? I know its always easier to make gains and get back to where you were than starting from scratch but I'm wondering if any of you have ever taken a long break away from the gym and come back? It makes me sad to think at one point I was able to pick up an 110 lb dumbell in each hand and incline press them and be the weakling that I am now.

Do you need to loose weight?

Too many variables. How often you're hitting it again, how are you eating, how are you resting, how is your workout, etc. You're young though and nearing your prime so it might not be a problem for you.

Ideally, probably 10-15 pounds. One thing I made sure of this time around was I wanted to be able to run 3 miles before I started lifting again. Now I have a much more balanced workout with my health in mind rather than "get big and swole" mentality.

I'm in the same boat. I am a lot weaker then I was about a year ago. I also need to drop about 10 pounds. My plan is to concentrate on the weight first, then hit the weights.

Fixed.
The US education system is amazing...
I used to lift almost everyday back in college and could put up 250 on the bar, then took a 1 yr hiatus and when I came back, just getting up 135 was a struggle for the first couple weeks. But after about 2-3 months I was back up to 250 and maxed at 265. Granted, I have been on a 2 year haitus from now since then and am toning now by only running, pushups and pullups.
And the day after that first day of lifting after not working out in a long time HURTS SO BAD

The amount of pain I felt due to soreness last week is something I don't to experience again. The nice thing is, after that painful week is over, I've been able to lift and felt pretty good the next day. It's weird when your benching 135 for reps and struggling and can remember when that used to be your warmup. It's nice to know I'm not the only one
