You won't get shit for under $500. And whatever it is, it probably won't be worth it. You'll get the skinniest belt available (16 inches wide). You'll probably get a motor that isn't made for frequent use, especially above walking/half-jogging speed (continuous horsepower is what really counts, and you probably wouldn't get above 2.0). It probably won't go above 10mph or 10% incline. The weight limit will be very low, which might not be a problem when you're standing on it, but will become a problem the more you pound on it when you run. The weight limit tells you a lot about the product's durability (fyi).
That being said, Precor is a really good treadmill, typically used in health clubs. If you can find one that is on sale or otherwise priced way below it's regular price, I'd tell you to get it. Otherwise, Pro-Form is the most common household brand out there, and probably makes one or two treadmills with the characterisitics I listed above that might also dip below $500.
I'd say, you should be looking to spend more if you're buying new (which I would also recommend), but if you don't want to spend more, then don't expect much. good luck

If you plan on keeping the treadmill for a while, then get the maintenance agreement. Trust me, I used to work for Sears selling treadmills.... get the maintenance agreement. I know they try to sell it on everything where it's basically useless (like appliances), but for a treadmill that you're pounding on, it's well worth it if you plan on keeping it and using it for a long time.
