heart rate monitors?

heart rate monitors?
As you guys have suggested, I am probably going to go buy an elliptical for my purposes. There is one I really like, but does not have a heart rate monitor. Do any of you use any sort of other heart rate monitor? From my research the target HR range for fat burning is 65-85% - but if I get this particular elliptical I won't know if I am in that range or not. If you have used any heart rate monitors, what has it been? Like it? Other suggestions? TIA
To find your optimal Target heart rate for Fat burning:
Take 220 - (your age) = {your maximum heart rate}
* this means you dont want to get over this number, or else your heart will have some serious issues!
Ex:
220 - age 33 = 187
now, you want to find your target zone...which is traditionally 65% - 85% of this (187) number....
187 X 65% = 122 = rounded is 120
187 X 85% = 159= rounded is 160

I have a basic Polar that my dad bought probably 15 years ago. Still works great. Polar makes great stuff.
That "fat burning zone" concept, while not necessarily incorrect, is useless. Your body burns a combination of carbs, fats, and (if it needs to) proteins every day for its energy. If you were to exercise and burn almost 100% fat, your body would simply use almost 100% carbs for its other energy needs.
The important thing is burning calories in general, and at a pace you enjoy and can keep doing on a regular basis. I'd go NUTS if i had to mountain bike at 70% of my maximum heart rate.

I have a Polar. It's a strap that you wrap around you chest. It talks via wireless to the watch. I don't think the strap batteries are replaceable
