Question Eating Healthy While Cooking for a Family??

Ok y'all...I have two small kids (3 and 6 yrs old). My husband says that every time he comes home I make him fat. (He's military.) While he's gone he basically eats nothing but grilled chicken, hard boiled eggs, and fruit. I'm sorry, but that's just not real life.

I don't cook horribly at home - obviously I want my kids to develop good eating habits early. I used 93% lean ground beef, we do eat a lot of chicken, I get our veggies in there (fresh as much as possible), and we only buy 100% whole grain.

Any suggestions? Personally I think he over-indulges when he's at home and snacks and doesn't spend 2 hrs in the gym 6 nights a week like he does when he's gone. So of course he's going to put on a couple of extra lbs while he's here. I make sure there's always salad and fruit in the house, but he insists that it's my cooking that's doing it to him.

I've recently lost 6 lbs without working out - just by eating the bulk of my calories in the morning and tapering off throughout the day and slowly decreasing my portion sizes.

What's a girl to do??

Jayne, who doles out the portions at meals? Does he take too much or do you "love him with food" and give him more than a normal portion?

-if you are serving baked chicken, try baking it without the skin,

-if you put cheese on the veggies for the kids, make a small batch without the cheese for he and you (or add it to the kids' vegs later),

-make enough food, but not so much that there are a lot of leftovers for late night snacking

-keep the snacks in the house pretty healthy

If all else fails, make him chicken breasts, eggs and fruit!

As someone who has been in the military, it's all about his lack of exercise while he is home. It sounds like you serve healthy meals and he enjoys relaxing when he isn't deployed
