Cleaning Out the System

I don't even know how to broach this topic, but here we go.

Do any of you regularly do a cleanse or try to "flush" your system? A while back I did a 10 day detox and cleanse. I didn't really feel much of a difference and the stuff was gross.

Last night, I decided to go all out. I was at WalMart picking up a few things and grabbed a couple of bottles of Magnesium Citrate. (Might as well make my husband suffer as well!)

I'm very regular - actually I go like clockwork, it's almost freaky. BUT I never feel like it's enough if that makes sense. I feel bloated a lot and so on.

Anyone had first hand experience with Mangesium Citrate? My Mom is a pharm tech and says to plan it on a day that I won't be straying from home. LOL

A few of my friends have been doing the juice cleanse/diet. It is supposed to be really healthy as it is all natural vegetables and fruit. In the few short days they have been on it they have lost substantial weight and feel a ton better. I myself have been thinking of doing it, I just dont know if I can get over the taste and/or not being able to eat anything.

It's great for you if you think dehydration, potassium deficits, and other things are healthy.

My brother used to do these. Now he has diverticulitis. Don't know if they're related, but it probably didn't help the situation.

Look into a food sensitivity or food allergy if you always feel bloated....

^ A week won't do anything if you have Celiac or are sensitive to gluten... it stays in your system for 3-4 months. She'd have to give it a trial run for that long in order for her body to be gluten-free.

Oh goodness. Y'all really got in it! LOL My husband actually thinks I have Crohn's Disease because of my burping issues.

I think I would have a SERIOUS problem trying to change my diet - unless I absolutely had to.

Burping does not equate Crohn's.
If you're very regular and not going at any other time during the day -- 1-2 times I'm assuming you mean, you wouldn't have Crohn's either.

You're right - burping along does not equate to Crohn's. It could, however, be a sign of a serious digestive problem. (I burp like a 300lb man after endulging in $1 draft and $.50 wing night. It scares people.) And by regular - I mean I drop 1 (literally one) at the same time every time. It's the only time of the day I go. I've never had a well-functioning digestive system, I just always chalked it up to my love of cheese.

WHICH is why I wanted to do a cleanse. Probably still will against the advice of AZ.

Gas can also be caused by a food allergy or sensitivity, as can the bloating (assuming you're just not eating too fast). Constipation can also be a symptom.

Again, if you're going at a regular time each day and especially since it's only ONCE, you definitely don't have Crohn's or Colitis.

You could also try taking some digestive enzymes (health food store) before eating to help.

I actually don't even know what Crohn's is. I just googled excessive burping one time and my husband stuck with it. Definitely don't eat too fast - I'm usually the last one standing. Anyway - thanks for all the input y'all!

I'm currently doing a 30 day USANA deal. My friend swears by it so I bought the vitamins, minerals and shakes to take. This is my third week and it's so far given me much more energy and I've lost about 5lbs (205 to 200 for a 6ft tall male) which isn't much but I feel healthier. Basically my diet consists of one or two shakes per day and protein snacks, then one regular meal but with foods from their list.

Your issue may simply be indicative of a food allergen such a wheat, gluten, corn, or similar. I HIGHLY recommend visiting an auto-immune allergist, my wife did and she found out she was allergic to a multitude of food stuffs, including all those I just mentioned. She had the SAME SYMPTOMS and now she's eliminated all food ails due to eating only those foodstuffs her tract can tolerate.

Secondly, all of those supplements and cleansers are total bullshit and won't do too much to help. Are you eating a sufficient quantity of fibrous vegetables? EXAMPLE: I eat 8 cups of baby spinach daily in a week...most people don't have a clue how much that is, and FYI: IT'S A LOT. Pair this up with complex carbs such as brown rice and whole wheat pastas and you've got your 20 - 30g of fiber. Supplement with tabs/powdered mixes if needed.

TRY THIS DAILY FOR A WEEK, then come back to this thread. I'm telling you now, until you reayll sit down an map out IF you're at least properly tending to your digestive tract properly, you're NEVER going to know if you're properly "tuning the engine"

The supplements will simply minimize your problems, then they will return when you resume your normal eating habits.

The supplement industry makes billions off of a single premise: people are too lazy to do this properly on their own, and they have become filthy rich from it. Skip the pill aisle, take that cash, and get to a farmer's market!!!!!!!

I completely agree that the "cleanse and detox" market is booming because it's an easy way out - but I (ashamed) admit that I did the Slim Quick detox. What I bought most recently, though, was simply a crazy strong laxative.

I do try to eat a fair share of fruits and veggies (more fruit than anything) but unfortunately I'm not fond of most vegetables. I'm learning new ways to be able to tolerate/enjoy them, but it's a slow process. I try to make up for this by eating nothing but 100% whole wheat/grain breads and pastas and drinking plenty of water (which I hate).

Maybe I should head to the Dr. Blah. One more thing to go about.

Yeahhhh...that'll do it. Fibrous veggies are mostly insoluble fiber which is the 'gut friendly' variant, and while whole grains do their part, veggies just do it better due to their higher insol. fiber content.

SVTMike and Death Metal both have good advice. Magnesium citrate is nothing to fool around with, dehydration, potassium deficiency, etc are the results. Unless you're north of 50YOA and are prepping for a colonoscopy it's a good idea to stay away from violent treatments to your GI system.
Go see a doctor and get advice that's grounded in science. This (or any other) forum is no place to seek guidance about serious health issues.
