Calorie Restrictive Diets

Anyone watch 60 Minutes this weekend where they discussed this? They had people who purposely reduced their caloric intake to roughly 30% below "normal." They say it helps keep the body younger and healthier. Looking at the skeletal features of these people, they appear more annorexic than healthy.

Discuss.

I understand reducing calories to lose weight, though 1000 calories is still pretty low. However, these people have made it a lifestyle. They had a "party" where the dinner was babyfood spread on wheat bread.

Granted, they are a control group for a scientific study.

One dude said "If you saw my wife without her clothes on, you would see she has the body of someone much younger than her age". She was at least 60 and thin as a rail, so she probably looks like a 14 year old Asian boy when naked.

My bro-in-law limited himself to 1200/day. He went from 320 to like 225. After a trip to NY and quitting that diet he got back up to like 280. He was doing exercise and stuff. I think he pretty much just ate Subway all the time. Everything he did was typical bounce back. I knew he wouldn't be able to sustain it.

He exercises to this today. He walks/jogs/bikes in the morning. But his crappy diet and eating junk late is the main reason he ballooned. I used to roll BJJ with him. This fucker in my guard was painful.

Aside from running 20-25 miles per week, I have been eating healthier. Eating more yogurt/fruit/trail mix instead of junk food. Eat fast foot only about once a week now. Also even got Hellman's LIGHT mayo lol. But one thing I have tried to but just can't give up is ranch dressing it is soooo good and essential on my salads lol.

I'm not so sure that is true. There have been studies involving mice, I believe, that have shown that calorie restrictive diets like the one moeronn described can increase longevity. I think that's what people who do this are basing it on. Whether or not it applies to humans remains to be seen I guess.

This is what was discussed on 60 Minutes. Many things that have been shown to apply to mice do not necessarily translate to applying to humans.

Regardless, even if you could live longer by doing this, there is also a quality of life issue. Living off of baby food you whole life isn't really living.

I've heard this before. The lower your caloric intake, the less you age....to some degree. It doesn't matter if you're taking in 5,000 calories and burning it off to stay thin, it's the total amount of calories consumed with no regard to calories burned.

Currently at 5,000 calories a day and balls to the wall lifting. Trying to get another 6 weeks in before I start my summer cut. Unfortunately I managed to lose a pound this week. At this rate I'm going to look like I'm 50 soon.
