Broke ankle, super bummed out :/
So how many of you have broken your ankles before? I have no clue how i broke mine, but i'm so so so so bummed out. I'm like at 80% of getting my weight back from hitting the gym, i'm looking great, feeling great and then bam, i break my ankle. Any tips on how i can maintain my size and stay strong while this thing heals? I haven't gone to a ortho yet (i'm going at 2pm) so i'm not sure how long the healing time will be, but so far i'm pretty upset, just in the face that i can't seem to do anything. Just making dinner last night was a accomplishment in itself. Any tips?
Thanks in advance

I broke (fractured) my ankle about 9 years ago. The talus bone to be exact. Doctors had to drill into both sides of the bone hoping blood would enter the holes and rebuild the bone. It didn't work and my ankle is permanently swollen. Not like crazy swollen but during the cold months it does bother my mobility sometimes. It sucked because after the surgery I was ordered to not walk for 1 month. I lived in a 3rd floor apartment

My main advice would be to follow your doctors advice on recovery. If he says stay off of it for 'x' amount of time, do it..

One legged squats?
If you can GET to the gym, can you focus on upper body and just make sure you don't drop a plate on your bad foot?
Are you in a cast or a boot? May make getting around a little easier.

You tore 2 ligaments and broke 1 bone and don't know how?
I'm also confused by your question. Last I checked your ankle is not part of your upper body. If you're looking to maintain size, go to the gym and do upper body (sit down) excercises that don't involve lower body. Plenty of things you can do.

I never broke an ankle but I did tear a ligament once in soccer. It was crutches for a few weeks, really nothing you can do
And to keep your upper body strength... just do your upper body workouts, I don't see how that would be a problem. Everyone would just see you hobble from one machine/area to another though lol.

There are also plenty of ab circuits you can do while immobilizing one or both legs.

^ You have smaller and larger ligaments in your feet. You probably turned it bad enough to obviously tear them. Outside of the foot right?
In HS when I played Basketball, I came down on peoples feet all the time. One time it was bad and thought I broke my foot. Turns out I just "stretched" the strongest ligament in my foot. Thankfully no surgery, just a few weeks of crutches.

I play a lot of basketball and have rolled my ankles at least 5 times resulting in mostly minor (1st & 2nd degree) sprains. However, one time on a fast break I stepped on someone's shoe, and my ankle touched the floor. I heard and felt a loud *POP* and immediately hopped to the bench with my momentum. I definitely had a 3rd degree inversion ankle sprain that took about 6 weeks to fully heal. Still, I didn't break a bone. Albeit, I was 16, but when you do something sever enough to break a bone and require surgery, it is hard to believe that you "basically rolled your ankle". I'm not saying you are a liar or that it can't happen, but I would be concerned about the fragility of your bones. How much calcium do you take in? Lifting weights puts strain on your bones, and they have to heal themselves which makes them (and you) stronger. Make sure you give your body everything it needs to heal itself, b/c heavy lifting is basically breaking the body down. You get stronger when it builds itself back up with the right nutrients.

I've had 2 foot surgeries in the past 3 years, so I've gone through my periods of being unable to run... My best advice is to lift upper body, and ride a stationary bike (if you can). I can't run on the treadmill for long periods, so my only outlet for cardio is riding a bike.
I still try to emulate HIIT on the bike by going all out for 30 seconds than a couple minutes of good paced riding. Riding a bike is boring, so I found that HIIT has helped me get the exercise I want without riding the bike for more than 20 minutes.

Stop complaining so bad and keep things into perspective that there are people that are much worse than you. One of those people being me. I wish there was a fix NOW for my spinal cord injury letting me walk after rehab. At least youre issue is fixable. Just pray thanking youre creator that you only fractured youre ancle and not your neck like Des' then say a little prayer for me that stemcell research opens promise one day that I'll one day walk again. I'm tired of the wait...lol. It's been since 04' so a brother is loosing patience ha ha...
