Thinking about plasti-dip

hey everyone!
Im fairly new to this forum, and i would like some suggestions

I picked up a 2010 acura tl sh-awd a few months back
and i stumbled upon the plasti dip car kit which got my attention

Now ive worked with it before on grilles, rims and such but i would really like to do my full car in the spring

my car is the darker blue colour which im not a huge fan of but i got a good price on the car so i settled

my car so far is lowered on tein springs and i picked up a set of 19" rota p45R in flat black

Im thinking about dipping the car and would like everyones opinion on this, whether its a good idea or not and what colour i should go for

I know its not a "tuner" car so to say, but i would like to stand out and i dont think anyone has ever dipped 4g tl before, at least none that i have seen

I would appreciate some input on this
thanks

I wouldn't personally do it to my car - but I'd be curious to see how it looks on yours! I would also question how it would hold up to the elements over any length of time.

I would get the car repainted if I didn't like the colour IMO...

repainting would be too expensive the plasti dip is only $400 shipped
and if i dont like it then i can take it off

no, this has got to be the rice'st shit to do.

Do yourself a favor a purchase 3m vinyl's to vinyl your car instead.

painting your 40k car with a spray can is not only dumb but idiotic.

you will not get a even spray as you will have spots.. some of the nissan 240 peeps that go drifting in my area did it, and you see hot spots of the plasti-dip.

also plastdip looks like shit

here is a example of vinyl.

http://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/866415-vinyl-wrap-diy/

vinyl last longer, and stronger. comes in many many colors.

hrm, maybe youre right
ive looked into vinyl and it seems like quite the job especially if youve never done it before, on top of being more pricey, but more value for the price as well
thanks for the input

trust me, vinly is the way to go, it is strong, and believe it or not.. the 3m vinlys are very easy to apply as they have bubble release technology. you can virtually squeeze the bubbles out without peeling back the vinyl.

buy a sample, try it out.. it only cost about $600 to do your car. ebay is a good place to find it.

search under 3m vinyl (insert color and if flat black or gloss)

I seen a few vids on youtube of people doing this and it turn out pretty good. Result will depend on your ability to spray properly and mask off areas you don't want to plastidip.
Vinyl is an option but remember you will be working with large sheets at time. Like when you do the roof or hood you would use one large sheet. Might want to practice by buying a small amount and practice on something regardless of which route you take.

$400 for something that can be peeled off and thrown away in a matter of seconds does not seem like a good investment. That's just my opinion. Maybe tinting your windows or upgrading to hid fog lights is a more logical direction at such an early stage of modifications.

Plasti dip the whole car? wow.....i wouldn't do that to my car but would love to see the results if you do.
I am assuming that your car is the same blue as Azine member "DJtanveer" have you seen his thread? his car is outstanding.
If you really don't like the colour, then you could probably purchase a smaller kit and experiment with it to see the results.

ya ive seen djtanveers car, its not so much that i dont like the colour i would just prefer a change to something that no ones done on a 4g tl before. i have uupgraded my fog lights to HID's already. ive looked into the vinyl stuff almost as far as going to buy it and backing it out in the end. it seems anything less than a full roll is $1000 new for vinyl. most of the used stuff are colours that i dont want or not enough material to do the whole car.
ive worked with plasti dip lots and it seems like a pretty good choice but if you guys think it looks to ricey then maybe i shouldnt do it

You need a good air sprayer or else you will see bands of layer. I've seen one of my friend did it on someone's SC400. Far away looks good but up close you will see bands. Also if you have bird dropping and will need to redo that section.

i thought you were saying you where thinking of just plasti-dipping the top 1.25 inches of the beak so the painted part is flush with the headlights.
all you would need is some tape and one can of plastidip

I think the OP is refering to the dip-your-car kits you can buy which are different than just picking up some rattlecans (which would look like shit). The kits come with a sprayer so you get a much better final finish. I'd never do it but it would make for a pretty interesting thread if you do lol.

Here are some done properly in a paint bay using the dip-your-car kits. These guys claim 12-18 months without chipping if you apply 4 coats. (not sure how many coats worth of product you get with the dip your car kits)

I agree with Potmilkz that the plasti dip is ghetto. I just got a quote today to have my grill and back strip under the trunk done for $220. Thats to sand, prime, paint + lifetime warranty. Obviously more expensive than DIY, but better than $400.
