Unhappy "Snorkel"; What is it? - Transmission Breather Cap

I was chanigng out my PCV which turned out to be a 2 hour project because I managed to drop the sleeve into bowels of the engine bay...and never did find it. Had to order a new one! Grrr....

What I noticed was a snorkle or periscope like rubber "valve" if I sight down to the engine bay left of the battery and right of the PCV. It seems to be sticking out from the transmission housing.
I wish I had taken a pic.

Does anyone know what that bugger is for? I am certainly ignorant to its purpose.

(sorry - couldn't resist)

I'm curious to know what it may be.

Not sure either. I don't recall ever seeing something like that. Maybe an expansion vent of some sort? I know the transmission is able to vent based on expansion/retraction when hot and cold. But I've never known from where.

Did you click the image button? Then upload from your computer (browse from device)? The link option never works for me. I have to directly upload the pic from the computer, otherwise it doesn't work. And make sure it appears in the dialogue box before you submit. Otherwise it doesn't seem to show up in the post.
