Shattered Sunroof

So this morning I'm headed to work...I'm on the freeway with the sunroof tilted open and all of a sudden I hear something that sounds like a firecracker going off in my car. I look up and see that my sunroof has been shattered by a rock. I immediately slide the bottom portion shut and close the sunroof.

I pulled over and noticed that some of the pieces had blown off...leaving deep scratches on my trunk and rear spoiler. There may have also been some on the roof but I couldn't tell. Some of the smaller pieces made it inside my car, and I'm still picking them out of my hair.

I make sure to never ride behind semis. If I'm going to pass one I gun it to get by quickly. I believe this rock came from a semi in the lane to the right of the one I was in, probably 2 or 3 car lengths ahead. I was just getting ready to downshift and gun it to get by quickly. I waited a second too long I guess.

Fortunately my insurance will cover the damage, though I have to pay my $250 comprehensive deductible. I will be without my car for a little while which sucks! Oh well, I guess it could've been worse.

I wonder how the rock hit you at that angle?

^the sunroof was tilted UP.

a small rock flying high enough would be able to hit it.

Sorry about your car.

Damn dude sorry about your window.

I've had a bad experience with rocks on the freeway coming from cars not semis.

Yeah, since it was tilted up it provided a very small area for the rock to hit. I expected to see a mark in front of the sunroof thinking it maybe bounced off there then hit the glass. That wasn't the case though, it hit directly on the sunroof an inch or two from the front.

I've been extremely paranoid about this ever since I got my TL. Black cars and rock chips definitely don't mix. I stay away from semis as much as possible on the highway, and I never tailgate ANY vehicle. I guess even being cautious it's bound to happen from time to time.

Wow thats gotta be a fluke hit. Your windshield and passenger windows have so much more surface area to hit.

The value of the glass must have been close to your deductable. Do you know how much the glass was? 400-500?

The glass alone was $681. I'm not sure what the labor would've been. It was a no brainer to go through insurance. Especially since I can also get the scratches fixed on the bumper/spoiler (and possibly roof if there are any).

Fortunately my dealer (Fountain Acura in Orlando) is awesome and reduced the daily rate of the loaner by $10 so there will be no additional amount owed after my $30/day insurance coverage.

Sucks, but thankfully it isn't worse, and you're not injured. Sounds like your dealer and insurance company are taking good care of you as well.

On a side note, won't your insurance pay for a rental?

Make sure you get whoever is doing the work to drop the headliner and remove any glass pieces that may have gotten stuck in there.

My Accord's sunroof was shattered by hail and after it was fixed, I had glass in my headliner that rattled and moved around as I drove. Most annoying thing ever. I ended up taking the headliner out myself and removing pieces of glass.

Sorry about you car. I worked many years in auto dealerships, and I don't think I've ever heard of a moonroof breaking like that. I've seen them damaged in accidents, hail, and even falling limbs/tree, but never by a rock. That sounds like something that would happen to me with my luck. Anyway, glad to hear you did not get injured and that insurance will take care of everything, less the deductible.

Loaner was $40 daily, coverage is $30.

They actually mentioned that needed to be done. I'm sure there's a lot in there.

I think an inch higher or lower and I would just have a nasty ding.

Ya that is very strange. Must of hit it just right. It's even wierd when you hear of back windows just shattering? Make sure you check everything when you go pick up the car. And yes I'm sure there's glass shards everywhere.

The more I think of it I'm kinda glad it happened the way it did. I could've been left with a nasty ding in my hood and a cracked windshield. Sure I'd get the windshield replaced for free (losing the factory seal) but I'd be left with a mark in the hood.

This way I'm forced to dish out $250 but at least my car will still be in near mint condition. With the recent paint job I'm a big fan of a car that's almost brand new in appearance.

God I hate INS companies. You drive a sweet ride and they will only pay economy rental car rate if you need a loaner. Had a big fight with my INS co over this issue once, they would not budge on the rental rate, yet they charged me higher rates for my full sized sport sedan (SHO).

Glad to hear there is no blood involved.

This reminds me of a Corvette Z06 that blew up at the track and had the back window shattered by the engine internals.

I never thought of it like that...though I could pay more in my premium for a higher rental rate.

Similar, but not really

----------------------

I found out that the damage totals $1,487!!! They have to re-paint the roof and trunk, replace the sunroof, and remove the headliner to get the glass out. Thank goodness I'm only shelling out $250!

I'm very happy with the way my insurance and dealership are treating me. It's looking like the end of this week or beginning of next that I'll get my baby back...can't wait!

That sucks dude. BUT I think I would rather have had the glass shatter like that, then have a big old dent in the roof. I am super anal about my cars and I gonna tell you, if you drive on the highway you gonna get a rock. Get within 200 feet of so of a dump truck and it guaranteed. They hit a bump and it raining rocks. I pull over when I see a dump truck. I have a clear bra on all my cars and every time I drive out of town, there is a small rock chip somewhere other than where the clear bra is. All you can do is touch it up. I would really be pissed to have my sunroof hit like that. I never knew such a thing could happen. I guess I will not be having my sunroof tilted when I driving out of town.

^^^ I agree, I'd rather go through all this than have a huge dent/ding elsewhere on the car that I have to look at everyday.

I'm extremely anal about my car too. I took it to my wife's family's during the holidays and was stressing every night it was parked outside. I park at the back of the lot every time, and keep quite a distance from the car in front of me on the highway...amongst other things.

It's actually kinda nice to have a loaner....stress level is a bit lower. I still treat it as if it's mine though (even washed the last one I had when I first got it, haha).

I remember a few people in the 3G forum having their sunroofs shatter for no reason. Theirs was closed was from what I recall. I don't remember if that was a defect or not and it seemed to happen to early batches of the 3G from what I recall.

Either way, that's gotta be a scary as hell sound to have that thing go off above your head. Glad you're ok.

^^^ Yeah, it is. Have a TL w/ tech that has less than 1k miles for my loaner, and the peace of mind knowing mine is gonna come back looking good. Can't wait! I just got the subwoofer and SRI in for Christmas so I'm missing her more than usual...haha

I am positive that it will come back looking good, what happened sucks and i hate driving anywhere near trucks, when they hit a bump you are almost guarenteed to get struck by debris.I thought i was the only one to wash a loaner, the dealer told me the car looked a whole lot better than when they give it to me lolz.

Jeez...that is a freak accident. Glad it was just this and nothing major. Wow...my comp is low...I keep my ded at like 100 or it might be free at this point with allstate...for this reason exactly!

You should be the first 4G with a carbon fiber insert to save weight! Talk to inaccurate!
