Pics Side-by-Side '09 vs '12

IMO this version of the power plenum grill is bad ass! What I didn't like about the 9-11 grill was it rolled up onto the hood and the lines were off. This version stops at the lines of the headlights and brings everything together. This is all they needed to do. Acura struck out again with the '12. Very Bland

2011 vs 2012 ($4k diff)
Going apples to apples in as near identical options and sticker price, I find I'm able to negotiate a $4,000 better deal on a new 2011 TL vs 2012 both with the tech package. Likely this is due to the dealer trying to push out his remaining 2011 stock (of which he has many). He presently has only 10 of the new 2012s. (John Eagle Acura, Houston, TX)
As a owner of a 2008, my current TL has depreciated $11,000 in just under 3 years, though it today has only 8,700 miles on it. Their trade bid seemed low ($20k) but with a recent incentive they're able to knock a bit over $5k of the sticker of the 2011. I know I could do better selling the '08 privately, but have to consider the tax credit in using it as a trade-in.
I'm simply undecided whether to get the 2012 and pay another $4k vs a 2011. Obviously if I buy the 2012 nobody will mistake it for a 2009 Other's thoughts welcomed.

The subtle grille of the '12 is more similar to my current '08 and the grille of '09 was one of the chief deciding factors in getting the '08 (both were available, so I had my choice of either). I guess what I'm saying is my reasons for not getting the '09 are probably just as valid today for choosing the '12 over the '11. The price difference is not a factor, nor should it be unless it was significant. At 10% it's insignificant.
I'm admittedly disappointed that the trade-in value of my '08 (with NAV and only 8700 miles on it) isn't substantially more, but in retrospect I did buy it at the tail-end of the 2008 model year and got a whale of a discount ($30k drive-out) so 29 months of ownership (if I go ahead with either an '11 or '12) has basically cost me $10k. Far less than the beating I'd have taken on a Lexus. Sure I could sell it to a private buyer, but that can be a hassle as well as a risk, not to mention loss of the tax credit.
Still not 100% decided, but right now leaning toward the 2012.

Thanks. I've spent the better part of the morning today pouring over all the reviews. Of course the reviewers are in love with the '12 just as you'd expect them to be. None of the reviewers hated the '12, something that can't be said when the '09 first came out.

John Eagle was doing far more today than just taking deposits, they were selling them. I can also tell you that they also have one less in their inventory because tonight it's sitting in my garage. Looks like they have (had) somewhere between 8 and 12 of them in this first delivery, though I did not see any any SH-AWD. Of the few they have right now about half are Tech.

2012 seen today!
Went and looked at the 2012 today. Drove my wifes 2009 TSX in to the dealer. My TSX was purchased at this dealer, my 2010 TL was at a different dealer, so he had no idea what other cars I might own. The reason I got a 2009 TSX was that the 2008 , older style, was just way to simple looking. When I got the TSX, I fell in love with the TL, and after a year, retired my Honda Pilot for the 2010 TL-Tech-SHAWD.. For me the 2012 is OK when you look at it on the lot by itself, but the one next to an 11, well you just see how tamed down the car is now.. Customers who can't make a comparison, once the 11 are gone, and who are New or first time Acura shopers have nothing to compare the 12 to, so I am sure they will sell many of these. I did not test drive the car, no time, but for me the interior is just a bit less Modernized, Hi Tech trim, then the 11. And to be honest with you, other then Silver, white and black, no other color works for me, plus the interior leather is way to dark for me on these lighter colors... I think you need to see the cars LIVE, as the pictures on the web don't show you why we prefer the 2011 Front and Rear, OH no Dual Exhaust, no chrome door handels... To each his own..

Three Wheelin'
LOL...that was my render from September 2008: here's the thread.
Honestly, if Acura had implemented like something above, it would have been great...but they didn't...but at least they responded to criticism and came up with a more harmonious solution in the 2012 TL. I know many of you 09-11 owners prefer your grille, that's great it's your ride, but with droves of dealers painting their TL grilles and less-than-stellar sales, a more conservative response was expected.
We should seriously kill these "what if Acura did this..." posts and move on. GrilleGate has been discussed now for 3 years

i have to see it in person... some pics i like the 2012...but the side by side pics in this thread make the 09-11 look better.. i agree with what others said..the -09-11 looks more aggressive...
funny.. the 09 comes out and people hate it. Acura spends money to "fix" it and now people like the old one better... Acura can't win!
the problem with the 09 -11 TL, to ME, is that the car looks SICK and aggressive with the body kit on it.. but they sell 99% of them with NO body kit. the grill is big and heavy...and if you ADD the body kit, it adds weight/mass to the car and the grill doesn't look so big... w/out the body kit,, the grill seems bigger and out of place.
Acura shoudl have made the underbody spoiler kit OEM / standard. it would have been a small increase in cost and the car would have looked FAR sportier.
same thing with the RL... the RL is a nice car but very tame/boring loking without aspec. aspec kits gives it a sporty look. they shoudl have sold more with aspec..
my RL lacks aspec and I wish it had it... but don't want to drop the money to put it on...

Looking at these two side by side. I would say I like the 09 better. It looks meaner. I do like some of the modifications to the tail on the 12. The smaller tailights and smaller silver strip help. I do not own a 4g either.

Rowing my own
Add these to this thread in case people didn't see them in the other, to me the black headlights really do a number to narrow the car a bit, looks a bit less bulky, I like.

The Sicilian
Yesterday I was finally able to find an Acura dealer with a couple of 2012's. They were both black. Here are my observations now that I have seen on in the flesh.
The car really looks like an Avolon especially from the back as I was saying all along.
I like the darker headlight housing, and the smaller reflectors and silver trim in the rear bumper.
I don't like that they did away with the quad exhaust tips and moreso I don't like the cut outs in the rear bumper cover for the exhaust.
Also it appears that the car sits higher than the previous model. Definitley needs to be lowered a bit to give it a more aggressive look.

An Avalon, wow. Looking at the picture it does appear to sit higher. My things was the loss of the aggressive edge....but as I said before the tweaks are nice. Just not enough for me to slide into a 12. If I make a move in the next year or so it will be a move up and out of an Acura.

I think that is just with current owners/enthusiast for the most part, to the masses they will more than likely like the 12+ look. Americans/Canadians tend to like more conservative/safe looking things, dunno why but they do.

On a Side Note
I just checked the inventory @ my local Acura dealership; they have 20 TLs: 10 2011s, 4 2012s & 6 2010s. The deals have to be insane on those 2010s.
Other fun facts:19 automatics & 1 manual. 11 have the tech package. 17 FWD & 3 SH-AWD. For those seeking the rare stick shift, it is a 2011 White Diamond Pearl on Taupe w/ the Tech package.
They still have not gotten a 2011 ZDX & the 1 2011 RL has been sold ...

When the 4g came out it was so different than the 3g and people were disappointed because it wasn't on the same level design wise. I think it looks OK myself but its definitely an aquired taste. The 2012 I think people were hoping it would STILL be aggressive but with abetter grill and perhaps tail end improve ments. What they came out with to me looks a lot like a camry or a Avalon.
I would never pay 40 grand for an avalon, even if it does have an acura badge.

Actually they can win. They won with the 3G design which everyone unanimously loved.

Sorry, but if you think it looks like an Avalon now and very little was actually changed then it looked like an Avalon before!
I have to laugh when I see these comments. I was at a very lousy, and I do mean lousy (Sterling McCall), Acura dealership yesterday evening. I saw the 2 different model years side by side. I sure didn't see an Avalon or Camry there, in either vehicle.

I do not mean to say because I am driving the 09 TL so I will humiliate 12. I totally respect what Acura did past these years until now.
BUT,
I truly love the 09 to 011 model.
They look masculine with sharp curve and line.
just like, 09 is a young college football player, sharp muscles, lean and tone look. Very attractive.
then the 12?
after the college football player got married and children ...maybe???
lose muscles, less lean, beefy look, belly?
So just apply to TL 09 and TL 12.
So sad...
I should wait till 2015 or 2016 to see a newer model.

Saw the 2012
Went to the Acura dealer today just to take a peak at the 2012. They had two black ones side by side so I took a real good look.
The front---for all the negative attention the 09-11 grill has received I have to say I like it much better than the 2012. It looks meaner, bad ass. Dont F*** with me bad ass. I dont mind acura changing the grill, but to me the 2012 car looks very camry-ish in the front.
The back--
Love the 2012 back. Everything looks better. The tails, the silver strip, everything.
The sides and interior I always liked a lot and still do.
Maybe in a 4-5 years when I get sick of my TL-S(no Im not sick of it yet, I just got it ) I will pick up a used 6 speed AWD.
Ill have to see what the 5th gen brings.
