Opinions and problems with 2009 Acura TL
Sad day, my fiancé hasn't been able to get comfortable with driving my 2007 type s 6 speed so I'm looking to stay with the TL's just get an automatic. What do you guys know about the 2009 Acura TL? Any major problems or issues? Any opinions are welcomed!

The only experience I've had with a 4G TL was as a loaner for a day. I'm personally not a fan of the looks and the interior layout is too much for me, it's a bit "in your face".
It does drive pretty damn nice though and ride quality is certainly improved over the 3G TL. That being said, I like the steering feel of the 3G far better, as well as the styling all-around.

Yeah the type s was my dream car, I love how it looks! But I'm forced to get rid of it. I'm trying to get a feel for what I should be looking out for.

Obviously your fiancé is now and will continue to be a very important part of your life - absolutely not questioning that. With that said, how often or how much is she going to be driving your TL? I drive an 08 TL-S and in nearly five years of ownership, my wife has only driven it twice and she knows how to drive a manual transmission.
Admittedly, the TL is not the easiest manual transmission to master.

Ugh. And she is on board with swapping it out for an automatic? Maybe find an automatic Type S?
Dont know your financial situation, but taking on additional debt or taking a step back financially starting out as a couple is tough. I don't like the beak on the early 4G TL models. If you can afford look for a 12+

If all of these check as OK then go for it. I am referring to the SH-AWD version.
PS. Sad day when you give up the Type S! That thing still turns heads.
PS2. I have never seen a girl behind the wheel of a 4G TL, women are more of TSX people - lol - so chances are your significan't other won't like the 09 TL.... unless its white? Girls like all cars white....

Thanks for the info guys. Yeah the 2012 and up is out of my price range. But I will bring up all the issues to the current owner and see what he says.

"Current owner?" Do you already have an 09 in mind? Not interested in looking for an automatic Type S?

I obviously dont know all the details, but it doesnt sound like a deal i would be interested in. Hopefully you are getting good money for your car as it is a highly desirable model. Best of luck to you.

I haven't been in the market since I found mine (which was years ago), but the Type S and even more so the 6 Speed are very desirable models. Spend some time doing a little searching here on AZ to get a feel. You can also look in the Black Market. One thing that will likely come up as you are at 103K, "is have you done the 105K service yet?" as it is a roughy $1000 maintenance item, it could impact your pricing.

Yes, I did that service at 95k just to be safe. I'll take a look. I feel like since it's very rare that it's worth more than what kbb and nada say but I don't want to put a price too high.

That's good on the service and it sounds like you are on the right path regarding pricing

If your car truly is well maintained and is in great shape, it is a valuable car. Don't be unrealistic, but realize there are many enthusiast who would love to have that car. I rarely see Type-S models for sale in Georgia, let alone 6-speeds, just to give you an idea. When I do see a 3rd generation Type S for sell, it is beaten to hell, has distasteful mods, bad service history, serious accident history, or all of the above. I think an 09 TL is great. They are basically the same maintenance wise if it is the base model. You might even be able to work a better deal due to the looks... I like how they look, but not everyone does.

Yeah mine is in great condition inside and out, waxed every month, all service records, and needs nothing. So I'll probably put it up on the black market and see what I can get for it.

Base TL is too good to buy for a chick. Chances are she'll never really appreciate your generosity and end up gaining a bunch of weight. Tell her to buy her own car, or better yet dump her for a hot 19 yr old with fake ID.

That's really hard to say because it is an enthusiast niche' market. Most folks are looking for automatics but there are those of us who much prefer a manual and as mentioned, a manual in combination with the Type S is a real find - which can translate into more $$.
The other CL listings I pasted were more with the intent of possibly having you look at automatic 3G Type S cars. Pricing seems all over the board.
Good luck with your search and keep us posted.

Alright thanks for looking those up for me. I'll see if I can trade for another type s auto and if not then ill probably just get a base model 4th gen model.

Ok so I'm discussing with the owner of the 2009 TL about how much he should add on top of the trade. His car is a base model 2009 Acura TL with 140,000 miles, all service records, clean title, black exterior with black interior and no mods. Mine is a 2007 Acura TL Type S 6 speed manual with 103,000 miles, all service done, and no mods. Silver exterior with black interior.

I like the 4G and owned one it was a great car.
Sorry to make this harder on you.... But I would have a very tough time trading between those two cars.. I'm not knocking the 4G shown, just saying your Type S is beautiful..
Whatever you decide just make sure you test drive the 09 thoroughly before you pull the trigger. It is going to feel very different especially since it has the base wheels and tires.
Good Luck.

Yeah, I mean maybe if the 4G was a SH-AWD or at least a FWD tech car w/18" wheels.. Like I said l really enjoyed my 4G and IMO it is much more refined than the 3G. BTW not knocking the 3G at all, great car, just my opinion.
But even with that said I would have a really tough time making that trade. Then again, sometimes you just have to make the move...
I know it's his fiancé but as they say, Happy Wife = Happy Life.

I have a 2009, bought it new in 2009 and now has about 70k miles on it. Only issue I had beyond the normal maintenance was the speakers had to be replaced twice during the first 2 years. Once on the front driver side and once on rear passenger side both were covered under warranty.
I thing I may add if you can get tech package I think it is worth it. Most people don't need nav but it also comes with real-time traffic, real-time weather forecasts, GPS-linked and solar-sensing adaptive climate control system, keyless ignition/entry, a rear spoiler, rearview camera and a 10-speaker Panasonic/ELS surround-sound system with DVD audio and 12.7 GB of digital music storage.

I don't want to add fuel to the fire but...how about you keep your TL-S and use it as your DD and get her something completely different? I'd personally opt away from the 140K mileage TL and since your TL is fully serviced (including the 105K), it's ready to go another 100K miles easily. Getting the car with 140K on it might be a decent buy...or not. You know your own TL, but not the 09, so there's a new set of variables to consider.
If you feel a need to get her a car to drive, just get her something else. If cost is a consideration, get her an econobox for now, and you keep driving the TL. That's a nice TL-S you have and unless you really want to part with it, I personally wouldn't do it.
I understand the 'happy wife, happy life' idea, but you need to be good with everything as well, otherwise you're going to have sellers remorse and possibly, some resentment towards the Mrs. to be.

I tried to explain the same thing(maybe not as eloquently) a week ago, but OP seems pretty set on getting an automatic for the future Mrs. Not sure of the details - like if there are two cars between them or what.
My Mrs. knows I'm a car guy and understands what my car means to me. She has for a long time and even when the kids were learning to drive, it only came up once that it would be easier if I had an automatic. Today, as you can see in my signature, we have an 09 Accord (auto) for the kids to use. My wife know how to and did drive a manual for years, but believe she has only driven my car twice in the 5 years I've had it.
Only the OP and his future Mrs. know and can decide what is right for them, but I suspect you and I have decades of married life experience............
