Mobil 1 full synthetic oil & K&N oil filter impression

Hi folks,

So my '12 TL had reaches 2200km yesterday and I decided to do the first oil change by myself. In the past, I would have the dealer to include a complementary oil change for every new car I bought when they hit 2000km. Some deal would provide 1 oil change free but that won't happen until 8000km or even later. For some people changing oil at this early stage seems like a waste of money and time. To me, this just gives me a peace of mind to know my car is running on clean and good oil.

This time, I chose Mobil 1 5W20 full synthetic oil and K&N HP-1010(if memoery set ES me right). The oil change process was quite standard so I am not going to cover too much anyways. You will need a jack and a stand if you want the job done quick and easy. The OEM oil filter takes some strength to remove but isn't difficult at all.

I will list my impressions down below.
1. Car runs extremely quiet at idle.
2. FEELS smooth and picks up speed faster. *feels*
3. The roughness when driving in sports mode is gone.
4. The engine vibration has reduced to very minimum.

That's all I got to share after a 20km test drive. Overall I am happy with result. The oil was on sale for $29 and oil filter was $12. Time spent was around 30 mins.

I believe the owner's manual advises not to do the first oil change until the MID requires it. Something to do with the additives put in the oil at the factory for proper wear in.

on a side note.. i love how our oil filters are right next to the engine oil bolt.. makes it much easier to just jack up the passenger side to work on it.

Thanks all the replies guys. Really appreciate them.

I am aware of the additives and when I purchased the car, I tried to get the dealership to include a free break-in oil change service which they could not include on this purchase. The service manager said, however, they could do the oil change for me at $90+tax(12%). In the past, I have always had my cars done break-in oil changes at around 2000km and I negotiate the service to be included the purchase deals. Since I don't get a freebie this time, I decided to do it myself. Back in 2008, BMW did a break-in service on my car for free because it was already on the free maintenance schedule. My 07 ES350 & 11 RX350 were both performed oil change at around 2000km. 2004 TSX had an oil change when I took delivery at 1400km (it was a demo vehicle) An exception would be my '12 911 (currently @ 2500km & in storage) as the dealer told me the first service won't be due until the car has 15000km/12 month. They said the engine on the P cars are properly break-in before deliver to customers. I don't plan on doing an oil change on this one because it goes to storage during winter season and won't see the road until maybe late march or even April by then dealer will be performing the annual service for me already.

I read lots of good things about Purple Royal product and since they now also make a special oil filter for full synthetic oil, I may try them for the next oil change.

YES! I totally agree. This has to be one of the best and easiest car to do oil change on. Nothing complicate and very straight forward process.

RP has already been proven to cause more wear on the engine than less vs a conventional oil. Do not use it. www.bobistheoilguy.com for more info. I will never touch the crap again especially after what I have seen it do on cars I have worked on.

I've seen proof that says otherwisw. I have been using it in all my vehicles without any issues. They all run as smooth if not smoother since the day I bought them.

I went to a local auto shop to check out something after dinner and saw Royal Purple 5W20 for sale at $17/1L before tax. Really expensive compare to the Mobil 1 I bought the other day which was $29/4.4L

Don't change out the original factory oil too soon. Follow the MID oil change reminder for the very 1st oil change.

The internal moving parts of the engine need the factory oil and the mileage in order to grind in and mate properly.

So I just had the dealer do my first oil change at 3750. That was a free one shot deal and what they scheduled it at. Should I have waited until the MID said change? It was at 60% when I took it in this morning. Totally freaked out now wishing that I had read this first...

So now should I change early again to get rid of any shavings (or other stuff) or just follow the MID from here on out?
Just checked the sticker the dealership put in the window and they state to change at 7750.
