Looking to get into a 2012-2014 SH-AWD 6MT

Hey everyone,

After my '04 TL got wrecked 2 days ago (see my seperate 3g thread for details if you're interested), ive started looking into what'll be my next car. Nothing new really catches my eye that much that is within my price range besides maybe new Accord, so ive started to look at TLs again, specifically 2012-14 SH-AWD 6mt.

I was curious if there are issues I look out for. The biggest issue I have is that there absolutely none that are local to me. I understand that im looking for a bit of a unicorn, but it seems like all of these are on the east coast (Im currently in Denver). I cant really afford to fly out to check out a bunch of these things, so im hoping I can figure out the right questions to ask, and figure out what exactly to look for when making my purchase. Any advice is appreciated. hope to join the 4g family soon!

Peruse the Problems & Fixes thread: https://acurazine.com/forums/4g-tl-problems-fixes-297/ for the most common problems.

I was in your boat a couple months back before I bought my '12 TL 6MT. I even test drove a '13 Accord V6 6MT before buying this and let me tell you, these TLs are a gem. Took me about 6 months to find my TL 6MT and even then I had to drive out 3 hours to get it, and I live in a major city (Toronto). This shows how rare these are so if you find one, go and check it out. Im not sure about the flying part, but if its a couple hours drive, its worth it.. No regrets since buying it. Only slight major issue I can say is the oil burning. I have to top up every 3-4 weeks. Not a big deal though, I had to do the same on my previous cars anyway (06 TSX and 06 Accord coupe). Goodluck!

You know they extended the warranty so you can take it to the dealership for an oil consumption test. If it burns 1 litre per 1500 km or more they will automatically replace the pistons and rings for free.

Yeah I saw the thread on someone getting the letter from Acura. I was going to wait it out but i feel like it's getting annoying now. I'm going to take it in next weekend to do the consumption test, along with the airbag inflator, which I got a letter for from Acura.

Thats good to hear. The only issues ive read that sort of concern me were the oil consumption issues and the prop shaft whine. Do you know what the terms of the extended warranty are?

There still havent been any TLs that match my criteria pop up anywhere near by (closest is like 800 miles away and is lowered with an exhaust). Ill probably go test drive the new accord 2.0T 6mt, Civic Si, and maybe the VW Alltrack, but im still targeting the TL.

It will defiantly be a matter of patience to wait for the right sh-awd 6mt to be up for sale. All depends if you can wait long enough. I posted the letter acura sent me about the warranty extension here

It took me more than a year to find my unicorn. My advice is to be patient. Know what you want and be swift when it goes for sale. These cars are highly sought after and you will be fighting another 17 people at a time after a post to get the car. If after test driving it, and having it looked at by a mechanic you like it?. Pull the trigger! Haggling the price too much can cost you the car itself. Everybody does it differently, but I got my TL 6MT by offering full sticker price (and then some for transport). I was going to lose it to some people from NY who got there first and were haggling. I knew I was at a disadvantage and decided to pay the premium. Hopefully you will get a good price! Let me know if there is anything else I can answer
