Just Purchased 2014 TL w/Tech Package

I drove a 2015 TLX and loved it, but I just couldn't justify spending 25K with two kids in college. So I bought garage-kept 2014 TL with Tech Package with 54,000 miles in excellent condition. KBB states that the Private Party Range price is between $18,446 - $20,307. I paid $16,500 for mine. I drove the heck out of it during the test drive, and the car did not disappoint. I am keeping my 2003 TL with 189,000 miles for my son to drive during the summer. In another year (when he is a college junior) we will let him take it to school. It still drives great! Anyway, this 2014 version should keep me happy until I become "unencumbered" from college finances.

If there is anything that you folks think that I should know about the 2014 TL, please let me know.

Thanks,
John

Nice color combo and nice price. Good choice for those of us "encumbered," as you put it, with college tuition obligations. Enjoy it.

OK, so I got the car today. I have a couple of questions regarding the D and S modes with the 6-speed auto. I am guessing that the S is sport and changes the shift points only (with no suspension changes). Also, can the paddle shifters be used only during S mode or anytime? Lastly, are the paddle shifters even worth playing around with? The sound system sounds a just a tiny bit better than the one in my 2003 (grin). Man, the ride is awesome! I'm used to my 2003 ride, which is a little on the loose side after 189,000 miles.

Yes, the paddles can be used in D. The difference is that in D if you don't continue to use them the tranny will quickly switch back to auto shifting. In S shifts don't happen until YOU upshift or downshift, except for the 1-2 upshift.

IMO the paddles are fine if you are going straight down the road. But while turning, like on an entrance ramp, one has to find the damn paddles (well, unless you don't change your hand positions on the wheel while turning), since they turn with the wheel. I'd rather the paddles were attached to the steering column so they are always in the same place.

S mode has no effect on the suspension.

Good buy. It should treat you well. That looks just like the color combo I have. I have 140K and it's still going strong. Love it except for the wheels, which are the same as yours, which I quickly converted to my winter tire set while using a set of lightweight OZ's for everything else.

I use the paddle shifters almost exclusively. But every car I've owned except this one was a manual, so I'm used to managing what gear I'm in. Overall I'm pretty happy with the responsiveness considering it's an auto. Keep the transmission fluid clean though. It can be picky. Some have had torque converter issues.
