Hello Everyone! So I want to learn more about cars but also more about my 2010 TL, but I dont know where to start besides going to this forum. How did you all learn about cars, their parts, and your own cars?

The forum can help. I've always been interested in cars so reading, watching, and learning about them has just been a hobby. I'm not mechanical really when it comes to cars so I leave most things to someone who knows what their doing. I just like to gain an understanding on how things may or may not work, and take an interest in things I like about certain vehicles. This forum has helped me learn more and will certainly help you learn more about your TL. You can search the forum for an answer or post a question to something you don't think has already been answered. Welcome to the forum!

i guess the hardest part about working on cars is that your working on a 40K+ car and you dont wanna f it up... but my advice.. dont be scared to take shit apart.

trial and error, this is how we survive as humans.

Indeed. The stealerships are counting on you being afraid of breaking something so that they can kill your paycheck with labor charges.

One of the best ways to learn is to start researching the fix you need. AZ has a lot of nice picture-laden DIYs hanging around. On some previous German cars I owned, the Bentley manual was so insanely detailed that I could have done pretty much every repair. They don't make them for Acuras, but maybe someone here can comment on the Chilton manuals?

The two best parts?

1 = The money you save on repairs gets rolled into the tools!

2 = When you starting hearing funny noises, you can rationally think about what is causing it - ya know, since you spent an entire Saturday two months ago figuring out how to take the front rotor off.

Good Luck!

As long as you have an interest, you will always learn more. I've been a car fan for as long as I remember, but haven't had much of an opportunity to work on them. Forums are a huge help as well, I learned a heck of a lot from this site, and I've never even owned an Acura

To learn about cars in general, you can read the car magazines but that will only get you so far.

To learn about the parts, you can read books on automotive repair and design. It's free if you have access to a good library. I enjoyed hanging out in the engineering section at my university library.

To learn about your own, you can start by going to a mechanic that's friendly and don't mind you hanging out when he is working on your car. When the car is on the lift you get to see and learn many things.

At last, patience. It takes time. I am sure I posted many ignorant comments and remarks on this very forum over the years.

Enjoy your ride in good health.

My source of information on how stuff works is, oddly enough, howstuffworks.com. Here's a link to the automobile section: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/.

I first learned how a rotary engine and an automatic transmission works by reading through their articles.
