Is Acura TL faster than BMW 5 or 7 series?

I was debating with my good friend who has a 7 series BMW, recently sold his 5 series. And he's stating that both his 5 & 7 series are faster than my 2009 Acura TL w/Tech package.

I told him that his car is a BMW built on sub-par luxury standard. My TL is considered a mid-size sports luxury sedan. I told him I'd ask around.

Im sure I'm gonna prove him wrong.

Thoughts?

You don't say which engines the BMW's have, but if I had to bet, the 7 series is probably faster even with the newer 3.0 turbo (740). The 5 series is likely faster with everything from a 535 and up. With the V8's the BMW walks off and leaves a TL.

This thread was a great way to start my morning. Thanks for that.

What kind of 5 and 7 Series, any of of the BMW's with a V8 and yea, you lose. Maybe the 535i would be close to the 6MT?

Also, what kind of race? 1/4 mi drag? Track?

lets see TL SH-AWD 305 HP 273 ft lbs torque FWD TL 280 HP 254 ft lb torque.

BMW 535 300 HP 300 ft lbs torque 528 240 HP 260 ft lb torque.

BMW 740 315 HP 330 ft lbs torque 750 400 HP 450 ft lb torque.

BMW 645 360 ft lbs torque 360 HP

2006 TL 258 HP 233 ft lbs torque

with that said you do the math. I know you didn't mention the last 2 cars but i had the pleasure to run with a 645 when i had my 06 TL and even though i didn't blow past him i stayed on his tail no less than a car length. I say F numbers it's all about the DRIVER. But common sense will tell you there's just certain situations and certain cars that doesnt matter how good of a driver you are you just can't win.

Which is quicker I'm saying.

I have a '09 TL w/tech package
My buddy has a '10 BMW 325i and an '11 740 ( I believe)

My TL would beat both of those in lets say a 1/2 mile.

If all one looked at was 0 to 60, then no, he wouldn't get his ass handed to him. What could possibly be the difference in car lengths between a 2011 740 and 2011 TL SHAWD on a 0 to 60 run.

A straight out petal to the metal 0 to top speed would be another story entirely

It would also be interesting to see how these cars did taking their best shot around Nurburgring.

Honda has VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) & BMW has Double-VANOS (double-variable camshaft control)intake/exhaust in fact almost everybody today has some kind of camshaft advance/retard management system.

This is not new stuff in the ‘60 & ‘70 I had spring loaded sprockets on my cam shafts in my race cars that provided the same function but in a very primitive way compared to current computer controlled units.

Interesting, the very last stop light grand prix I ran before I sold the '06 6MT was with a black 645 & I had almost the identical results. I was about 3/4 of a car length back going into 3rd. Was no way I was going to close the gap, if anything the horsepower spread would have opened it up, so that was that.

Since we both go the same way most days the next time will be payback, big time.

The 7 series would destroy you. You probably would beat the 3 series, but not the 335.

That's the way it has to be. Lol. I rarely back down from any car unless i am for certain i don't have any chance what so ever. Or if i just don't want to waste gas that day .

The funny thing about the BMW was i was driving minding my business he pulled up behind me , i switched lanes from left lane to middle then he switched and got behind me.At that point i had no choice.

How many points do you have? With the current crop of cars in 2011 there will never be a winner in a street race unless you are willing to open it up above 100 and risk killing yourself and others just to prove a stupid point.

actually all the points on my license are from when i was really young and even though they can still be seen they don't count towards my driving record now. Also i haven't had a speeding ticket in almost 6 years and most of them were never from racing.

Also why is it every time someone mentions a damn quick highway race some jerk has to come in throwing facts and their opinion around. To each is own. Unless you never sped past somebody for going to slow never ran into another car on the highway and pushed it a little or just sped cause you were in a rush don't come on here judging people and throwing your opinions around that shit is so stupid.

I swear i have never seen or heard of a bunch of people into sporty or some what sporty cars that are always doing the speed limit and never open their car up once in a while any where other than a track.

It's not bro, TL means top of the line!! It's a sports car, BMW is sub-par luxury. I'd go with a Lexus over a BMW, any day of the week.

I think you would agree!

I usually ride with the pack when I know the roads and within 9 miles of the speed limit on roads 55 or over when I don't know the roads. Just because I drive an inifinti doesn't mean my car has two speeds, on and off.

I have sped past pokeys, but I don't pass a car at 100 who is doing 65. If someone doesn't want to let me pass I'm content to ease off the gas and get behind them. Having seen enough cops come out of hiding to nail the aggressive drivers on the road keeps my driving in check lol.

I would take a 335/535 over any of the Japanese entry-level luxury vehicles, if price was no object. Having driven every modern BMW except the m5, m6, alpina and v12, their handling and performance cannot be beat.

With the exception of the 328/528, the 535/750/740/550 in varying degrees would all beat the TL. Especially as speeds started to exceed 90 to 100.

There is not much difference between 6sec to 60 and 5sec to 60 in terms of car lengths.

Have you driving the 750/740/550/135/335/z4/650?

Have you driven the G37x?

Can you claim the TL is faster then the G37x?

According to published results the G37x is faster then the TL? Even if I assume the TL and G are basically equals in terms of handling and performance, I can logically assume the BMWs would outrun both the TL and G in varying degrees as stated.

Englishtown Raceway has a 30 entry fee on Wednesday. You can take your car down there an pace it with other cars and walk out with a timing slip. Why don't you do that and see how fast the TL really is? This way you don't have to street race and can get a sense of how your car really perfoms in a straight line.

I make no claim about a car I have not driven, unlike you! You sir, have NO credibility in my books here when it comes to comparing the TL to ANYTHING.

I can't help but wonder what an Inifiniti owner would be doing on this site, making comments as you have. Troll? Dunno. Just one of those mysteries of the universe.......
