2014 acura elite or 2014 bmw 335i ?
 

I currently have an Acura T sh awd 2009 with 240k clicks and it also burns oil like crazy... so im looking to get the 2014 tl elite or a 335i bmw (2014) ... what u guys think? which car is better overall? and does all 4g Acura tl burns oil?

I have a 2009 and I agree that it burns oil but it has been reduced by using full synthetic oil. The 2014 model has some improvements over the 2009 model so hopefully some with 2014 model can comment. I would only stay with Acura because of long term reliability and resale value.

Not all 4Gs burn oil. Only the SH-AWD ones with the 3.7 are oil burners and not all of them do, it seems to be hit or miss. The FWD ones with the 3.5 don't burn any excess oil. So it depends if you are looking at SH-AWD or FWD.

If you are looking to buy for long term then Acura for sure. Otherwise I would test drive both and pick whichever you like best.

The TL generally will have less stupid little things break than the BMW, except for the engine burning oil as mentioned. If you buy 4/5 years old car, I think you'll have better luck with Acura than BMW. Consider the BMW if it has low mileage and some warranty.

coming from owning a bmw with the n54 enginer (135i) the known issues for that platform:
-wastegate rattle. this will eventually occur as the wastegate assembly and rod center through a solid metal bushing. when this bushing wears away it causes a rattle. BMW's "Fix" was to software patch the wastegate to stay closed more of the time to reduce rattle rather than fix the physical issue. Very rattly on colt startup.
-Carbon buildup due to the direct injection. The only fix is to have the manifold removed and walnut blasted to remove the buildup. As it builds up you will notice a performance decrease. Just more maintenance to keep up with.
-High pressure fuel pump, i believe they recalled this but only extended the warranty. not sure if this was ever fixed. The fuel pump would crap out and throw check engine lights.

Unique issues i had with my car:
-led ceilis rod in tail lights would not light up, bad connection in the wiring of the rear tail lights. had to get the assembly replaced still would sometimes not light up.
-cam issue, excessive grooves formed on the camshaft.
-wheel bearing prematurely failed.
-radio sometimes wouldnt turn on, garbled display of characters, german cars sometimes have electrical gremlins

Knowing all of this I would probably avoid a used one unless you are sure you want to tackle all of the maintenance things these cars take. The acura despite the oil consumption isnt that bad if you can find one that isnt excessive. The one I picked up 2012 awd sh tl isnt bad and with the interval I do with oil changes its usually only a quart low.

Thanks everyone that reply ... I did some research and found its mostly the 09-12 3.7L Acura tl that burns oil the most ... so maybe the 2014 tl is my best bet

I'd like to hope that maybe Acura took some sort of action later on through the model year, or on the 3.7L engine in general. But I wouldn't count on it. Even if you pull the trigger on a 2014, I'd be mentally prepared to deal with oil consumption.

Don't get me wrong, I'd go with the Acura as well over the BMW if you're looking for value and reliability but still sticking with a pretty good car. But I think the likelihood is still high that you'll encounter the oil consumption issue.
