2012 tl sh-awd

Hi all,

After looking at several vehicles and based on my '03TLS having nearly 300k miles on it and still going strong, my son is looking to purchase a 2012 TL SH-AWD, ~53k miles. I noticed the prop shaft issue. Any other issues to check on with the dealer, other than the usual stuff (# of owners, location of registration, etc.)?

Is everyone running premium fuel in their car? What should we consider as far as the oil consumption issue being discussed?

Also, this car is black with an umber interior. Seems to be a pretty unique interior color. Is there anyone out there with this color combination or interior color?

Thanks!

Yes, use premium fuel. No way to know how much oil the engine will burn until you own it and put some miles on it. Some apparently burn more than others.

Some burn oil due to the issue with the cylinder liners in the 3.7L. At first I thought it didn't affect carbon buildup or issues like that, But I came across Riboflavin's post which showed a somewhat ugly picture: https://acurazine.com/forums/fourth-...k-assy-946659/

That kind of surprised me. I don't mind oil consumption but that kind of carbon buildup is likely to cause knock. But it may be an extreme example. Either way, I'd most certainly use premium to avoid knock, especially if there's some carbon buildup in the case that you start burning a bit of oil.

I'm anal about that kind of stuff. I check my cylinders with a boroscope every 5K miles or so to see if I've got buildup on the valves or piston head.

Have the same car, its been good to me so far. Test drive and go through the normal used car things. Prop shaft/oil consumption not a deal breaker. Make sure the airbag and tranny software recall/update are done. Though mine is black on black I did see some black/umbar when I was searching. As already stated use premium.

Bought my 2012 SH-AWD CPO with exact same mileage back in 2013. Approaching 90k here soon and I did have the prop shaft issue but had it replaced and it is fine now. Also had the Takata airbag recall (obviously), and the torque converter, all which were also fixed under warranty. Car is pretty much maintenance-free otherwise... no complaints!
