2010 TL CBP crows feet

Hello everyone, I am long time lurker on this forum. I recently upgraded to a 2010 TL SH-AWD from my 1994 Legend GS with 215k miles. Unfortunately my TL has the notorious "crows feet" on the hood, rood, fenders, and trunk. I came across the TSB Honda put out for the NH-731P Crystal Black Pearl, but I haven't found anything official from Acura stating this is a problem.

I took my car to my local dealer who had a factory technician look at it. They said they will only cover half of the $8000 it will cost to fix this factory defect. This car is less than 4 years old and has under 60k miles, this should not be happening to a luxury vehicle.

Has anyone had any luck fighting this with Acura?

Here are some pictures:

I contacted Acura on Twitter to attempt to bring this issue to the masses. If you or someone you know has this paint defect on their Honda/Acura please let them know on Twitter or through other channels.

I remember reading other post with same issue... You need to start by calling to corporate office first, dealer later.

Wow, that's awful looking. I'd keep pressing on getting Acura to cover the full cost. (Makes me worry - I have CBP too, but so far, paint looks fine). Does anyone know if there's a VIN range for the problem CBP cars?

Acura really needs to do the right thing and put out a TSB on this. Honda has already done it. They should also pay for his repaint. This is crazy for 60k miles.

Dear Lord that looks terrible... I had always heard about the crows feet thing, but have never actually seen it. Stay persistent my friend, and best of luck!

My first time seeing this is well and that's horrible. OP I hope Acura does the right thing and take care of this for you.

Thank you for the support. I called the 1800 number for the corporate customer service, that phone call felt like it went no where. The guy basically told me I should "be happy with what I got". Felt that was extremely rude from a luxury car maker customer service agent.

I have a feeling Acura is going to ignore this issue like they did the 3rd gen TL transmission failures.

Wow... this is not what I consider customer service.
Did you ask for a supervisor?

BTW... did the dealer do a paint thickness reading?

I spoke to a supervisor, but he was no help. I'm not sure if they took a thickness reading. I know the factory representative looked at my car and determined that Acura will only cover half of the $8000 cost.

I actually just got off the phone with another representative and he told me since my car is 3 months and 9k miles outside the paint warranty, there's nothing they can do. I tried to explain to him that Honda extended the paint warranty to 70k miles but he insisted that Honda has nothing to do with Acura(Which is the farthest from the truth). Apparently if you're not the original owner, then you're worthless to Acura.

We'll I got the official word from Acura today that they will not repaint the car. They said that even through it's the same paint code as Honda's TSB, it doesn't apply to them since they are different companies(right lol). Also I was 3 months and 9k miles outside the standard paint warranty, so they "don't owe me anything", as the guy over the phone put it. They did offer to pay 50% of the cost to repaint the car, but honestly it's not worth it in my view since that will be around $3000 out of my pocket to repaint a 4 year old car.

I will try to appeal it but I'm sure they will not budge. My advice to anyone with a CBP TL is to keep a close eye on your paint, and pray you are still within the paint warranty if you do find something.

If you are in California (Southern) or nearby, make the drive to their local corporate offices in Irvine.

That really sucks. I had the same issue but noticed it shortly after taking delivery (6MT shipped across US). I bought CPO and it had less than 10k miles so the local dealer took care of it. All metal surfaces sanded to metal and re-painted.

How did you not notice that before buying?

Well when I went to look at the car it was a dark and rainy day. At first it just looked like it was dirty and needed a good detail, so I didn't pay it much attention. I honestly didn't notice how bad it was till a couple of days later when the sun finally came out. Again I thought it just needed a good detail so I didn't worry. While at work one day I decided to search the forum for CBP threads when I came across the post with the crows feet issue. That's when it actually hit me that this could be what's happening to my car.

So honestly it's my fault for not noticing the actual issue first and for buying a car on a rainy day. Failing paint was not on my mind when buying a 3 year old Acura, especially coming from a 20 year old Legend with excellent original pearl paint. I still feel Acura should do right, just like Honda did, and repair this issue.

Wow I feel bad for you man, I just bought a TL at 60k and didn't notice any paint problems. Will double check eventually because that's scary.

Hope everything works out.

Czech .. give me a buzz.

Did you happen to purchase the vehicle from Radley Acura? If so, you bought my old vehicle and I have an interesting story for you about the paint and scratches on the vehicle which were masked by their 'detailing'.

My friend with an Acura CSX (Canadian civic) has this issue as well. Contact corporate as this should be covered since it was for him. It is in fact a manufacture defect.

Yeah it's definitely a known issue. Pretty shady of Acura to cover it in some cases and not others...unless it really just depends on the dealership.

14thandeuclid I PM'ed you.

This is definitely a known issue within Honda/Acura. Honda at least acknowledged it with the TSB, probably because of the amount of CBP cars they sold compared to Acura .

The authorized Acura body shop I took it to knew about the issue. After talking to the manager there, he said they had 3 Civics waiting to be repainted because of this issue AND they just did a 2010 TL 3 months ago.

Well according to Honda this only affects 2008-2010 cars with CBP. I haven't seen any cases of 2012 models affected with this issue.

CZECH, i think i brought up this issue to the 4g side first.. i got my car repainted by acura, didnt pay shit but then again i bought it new so they had to paint it.

i hope we all learn from this for all future car purchases.. 1 good thing tho is that my paint job seem to look way better than the OEM paint job and less prone to swirls for some reason.. maybe its just me lol

Absolutely! Hell, the longer I'm on this site the more I realize I don't know shit! I just had to give potz a hard time because the opportunity doesn't present itself often.

In all honesty, everything I know about cars I've learned online (and I have a long ways to go). My Dad is a businessman who couldn't care less about cars so I wasn't brought up doing anything in the garage. He can fill up the gas tank...that's about it. I got into cars while owning my Tiburon and the forum I was a member of taught me a lot. Fortunately I've learned even more from AZ and continue to everyday.

noob questions, why is it given the name "crows feet" ? I've seen this before on other cars, but thought it was part of the paint. Then again I never inspected closer...

I googled the term and I found this. My guess is that it looks like a crows foot "walked" on your car.

well it looks like micro crows walked all over your car.. crows or most birds have 3 claws on each leg.. thus crows feet

My understanding is the specific issue that Acura has acknowledged and fixed (in some cases) is limited to 2010's.

I believe I've seen other model year CBP's on here with problems but not sure if it's the same.

2010 Acura TL Crows Feet Too

Hi All - new to AcuraZine but found this thread on Google and thought you'd want to hear my story. I have a 2010 Acura TL with CBP that has crows feet. Acura has agreed to repaint my car at no cost to me, however, now I'm concerned about the resale value of my car. I recently spoke to someone at another dealership and they indicated that I could lose 25-30% of the resale value due to the fact that the paint is no longer OEM. Has anyone had any luck getting a payout from Acura to cover the difference? Or has anyone taken any legal action against this?

Mine is being repainted right now for the second time. I had my TL for 3 days for the month of June. I haven't had it at all in July yet, and I'm assuming i won't receive it back until August. Acura gave it back at the end of June and I noticed they didn't do half the car. I'm not to worried as of right now, they gave me a 2014 RLX as a loaner and I'm going to put the mileage on that thing.

What ever happened with the OP?
