"V" rated and "H" rated tires

Took a peak at Costco for tires and was told they WOULD NOT sell me "H" rated tires for liability reasons since OEM tires are "V" rated. I figure I would need new tires on a 3 year old car and just wanted to get an idea on prices for four new ones.

Can this correct ? I will never hit 100mph in a car. Or even 90mph.

Retailers are dicks like that. Lawyers ruin everything. You would be fine with H rated tires unless you're some kind of jackass that thinks it's ok go over 130 mph on public roadways.

this happened to me a few months ago when I bought tires. I couldn't get the tires I wanted but found another set that I liked with w rated so I went with those.

My car has been at 130mph on H rated tires without noticeable problems (closed course in Mexico). I got my H rated tires from a reputable tire retailer.

Generally they will not sell you lower rated tires at one point it was federal law that you could not alter oem parts including wear/tear parts. Replacements had to be of equal quality I think that still may be the case. While its not widely enforced it is proper for them to only put V or higher rated tires on the vehicle.
