Synthetic and MID Service Warnings

Hi

I have 24,500 mi on my 2006 6MT tsx. I want to change to synthetic, but am curious if the service sensors know i have changed to synthetic.

What i mean is, i don't want to get A1 or B1 service at 5,000 mi when synthetics can last a lot longer than that -- that'll get super annoying...

Thanks

The sensors do not know that you changed to synthetic. After I changed mine to synthetic, they kept on the same pace. So I just reset it and changed the oil next time the car asked me to.

Same here. I changed to synthetic at the first oil change and any change in the service intervals I'm sure has nothing to do with that.

I don't believe there are any "sensors". I think there is only a program in the engine computer that monitors RPM, mileage, driving intervals, duration since last change, etc. The oil itself is not likely part of the equation. I bet if you don't change the oil at all but reset the service clock it will respond exactly as if you changed the oil based only on driving style.

I've changed to Mobil 5W-30 at 5,000 miles and I now have +22,000 on the odo on my 06 TSX 5AT. The intervals remained the same for all services when I made the switch.

Which makes sense. One of the benefits of switching to synthetic is that you can effectively double the mileage between changes.

What about filters, etc?

Resetting the MID is easy? should i RTFM on this one?

Thanks, I'm coming up on another change and am going to switch (~26,000 mi) to synthetic. I want to be prepared for the annoying Yellow Exclamation mark that comes on WAY too early.

I change my filter every 5,000 miles the same time I change the syn oil. You still need to stick with the original interval for the oil filters (every 5K) even if you plan on extending the oil life to 7,500 to 15,000 miles. Unless you can find an extended life oil filter, I don’t know of any off the top of my head.

I purchase my Mobil 1 at Wal-Mart for about $22 and take it to the Acura dealership for the oil change. The dealership is still cheaper (but not faster) and they wash the car compared to the Quickie lube places around town ran by teenage mechanics.

Just hold in your reset button when the service minder message is on. I believe you have to hold it for 10-15 seconds, and it will tell you to press reset to reset or any other to cancel.

But I'm sure someone within a few minutes will chime in with the correct answer (usually sounds something like hold the button in for 14.2 seconds, and the MID will display.... even the spacing will be correct)

excellent, thanks! buying the oil at W-M is a great idea. Who doesn't like to save money all while living better? Is the change worthwhile? if it helps, i live in FL where it's 45 at its coldest (no cold cranking issues or anything - and my baby is garage kept) :-)

Side note -- I don't know about the TSX, but Honda is renowned for it's flimsy stamped pans with weak threads for the oil plug. It's easily damaged if proper procedures aren't followed. If you change your oil yourself, or take it to a "quick" place, be sure to have a supply of crush washers on hand and be sure they replace it.

Not true - the filter gets changed on the B intervals which is every other oil change.
Of course, you can change the filter whenever you wish ...

It doesn't matter. Using a synthetic oil rarely increases engine oil life.

Synthetic oils do NOT necessarily last longer than conventional oils. They are still subject to the contamination (such as fuel dilution) as conventional oils. It is an incorrect assumption that using synthetic oil automatically extends one's oil change intervals under any driving condition.
