Octane doesn't matter?!?!

I just found this article... and just when I thought things we had this octane thing all figured out... Here we have lead/top/bmoc type auto engineers and scientists saying that octane really doesn't matter (with a few exceptions).

http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/...emiumgas_x.htm

What is an extra $2.50/week ($130/year) really worth to my car or my psyche?

Even this article mentions that it DOES matter with engines that are designed for premium, although they don't think it matters that much.

Kind of like Steinway vs. Yamaha, maybe.
