There are dual layer recordable DVDs.

Hopefully it will be a major update. I was really disappointed with last years update (and I didn't buy it for that reason).

Version 4.31 for the 2006 TSX (which has a different NAV system than the 2004-05 has) has so much more coverage it isn't even funny.

Just compare all the cities that start with the letter S in Ohio between the two versions as an example: The latest update for the 2004-05 TSX's has only 28 cities while the version that came with the 2006 TSX has like 101 cities.

The 3.60 version for the 2004-05 TSX's better be on par with what the 2006 has or I am going to be annoyed.

That post of mine you quoted was from 3 years ago. Yes I now know there are recordable dual layer DVD's now. They weren't widely available back when I originally posted that.

On the DVD ordering website I noticed that the 2007 update for the 04-05 TSX's appears to now have at least the coverage that the 2006 TSX had.

According to the website it appears that the 3.60 version for 04-05 TSX's now lists 105 cities in Ohio that start with the letter "S" which tells me that this should be a major update in regards to verified areas. What is strange though is that the website does not mention any updates to Ohio in the "What's New" section.

Question 06 4.55 version question

I called Alpine DVD sales and they couldn't confirm this basic question. Although no map updates are available for my state, will the new DVD disc have updated POI's for my area so that it won't be dialing or sending me to a business or restaurant that closed or relocated?

I'll order the latest navi dvd for the '06 if someone wants to buy it from me after I have it for a few days. I'd sell it for 20 bucks cheaper than the price.

I'm curious of the exact same question. I found this in the FAQ section of the alpine site

What is the return policy for update or replacement DVDs?

You may return the item within 30 days of delivery. Proof of purchase is required. A copy of the packing list that comes with your disc can be used for this purpose.

Returns or exchanges must include your complete contact information, a return address and daytime phone number, along with billing information from the original purchase.

Returned items are refunded at the original purchase price, plus applicable sales tax, in the original method of payment. Items must be in their original container and must not be damaged.

According to the FAQ on the NAV order site...

"If I'm not happy with my new DVD, can I reinstall my previous disc?"

Yes. Your previous disc can be reinstalled, but your dealer must perform the procedure.

-----------

I think the reason is that the DVD usually does a firmware upgrade when it is installed and the dealer must have to reset something to get it to load the firmware off the previous version you were using.

Dealer reset

I tried my neighbors 3.5 from his new TL in lieu of my TSX 3.4. It worked fine. I then put my 3.4 back in and it also works fine

Why would I need to go to the dealers

Because obviously the firmware wasn't changed since those 2 versions were the same or didn't require a firmware update. If you put in a new version that changes your firmware (as was the case in the first upgrade I did on my 2004 TSX) you can't just put the old disc back in the drive. This was reported on here years ago.

Well I got the new 3.60 version for the 2004-05 TSX's. I have to say I am pretty annoyed. While it certainly has newer points of interest (newer resturants in my area have been updated for example). The coverage map listing they have on their website must be wrong and I can only assume the updates they list on the website were indeed the only things they added. It would appear that a huge number of cities that are listed as "verified" on the 2006 TSX version of the NAV still remain "unverified" on the 2004-05 version.

When I saw the new map coverage listing for the 3.60 version it appeared that they added many more cities. The example I used before was cities in Ohio that start with the letter "S". According to the Acura NAV Ordering website the 3.40 and 3.50 versions there were only 28 cities. However in the 2006 TSX version there were over 100 cities in Ohio that started with the letter "S" that were listed as verified. On the map coverage listing they have for the 3.60 version there is also over 100 cities in Ohio listed that start with the letter "S" including Steubenville Ohio (a town where I have family and visit often). Well, I just installed the 3.60 version and calculated a route to Steubenville (from Columbus, OH) and sure enough, Steubenville, OH is STILL UNVERIFIED.

That tells me that the coverage listings were probably accidentally copied from the 2006 TSX version and therefore are probably wrong.

The 2004-05 NAV updates appear to have no where near the coverage that the 2006 TSX version has. That really pisses me off.

When I installed the DVD (I previously had 3.40) it did a firmware upgrade. There doesn't appear to be any obvious visual differences (I didn't expect any). The database is from June 2006.

I think you can get your money back if you return the disk within 30 days. The street I live on isn't in the current 2006 database and I've had the car only 2 weeks and the new disk is now out. Timing is everything I guess. I wonder if the new disk will have my street. I'm also pretty disappointed in the POI database. I searched for "Lowes" home improvements and didn't get any local hits even though there are many in the city. Maybe 50% of the time I can find what I want, and that is probably a stretch.

I just received the 3.6 disk as well. It updated my firmware from 1.0010 to 1.3800. It seems to calculate and recalculate a bit faster but i haven't really tested it thoroughly. It also lists a few ramps and streets that were not on the old dvd. However, i'm upset that the maps do not at least mirror the 2006 TSX navi maps...at least according to GeorgeTSX's post. That doesn't make sense to me.. why would they do that and expect someone to pay $185 for the disk. GeorgeTSX, is there anyone you can complain to about your findings.

I am looking for an address I can write to about it. The phone number they list seems to be for answers about orders only and they can't answer technical questions about the disc.

For kicks, I wanted to see if I could copy the 3.6 nav disk. I made an image of the dvd using blindwrite, and burned the image on verbatim dvd+r DL media with "
dvd-rom" booktype. When i popped the copy into the dvd rom of the car, the nav screen gave me an error message along the lines of "invalid disc...blah..blah..blah". So i'll try one more time utilizing alcohol 120% to see if it works.

Just use your DVD/CD burn software (I use Nero) and choose the "Copy Entire DVD" option (that's the option in Nero) to burn to a DL disk. My backup copy works flawlessly.

I backed up my '06 v4.53 disk a few months ago and carry around the original in a protective sleeve in my glovebox. After seeing that I could back it up, I wanted to keep the original disk safe in case anything happened to my working copy.

Yes, I did. If you have any experience burning single layer DVD's, the write speed will likely be quite a bit slower backing up your nav disk, depending on your hardware.

I've never had the need to back up to a DL disk before, and it takes awhile. Choose the "Copy Entire DVD" option as selecting all the files on the disk, including the hidden ones, doesn't work for backing the nav disk up.

Yes, the booktype is set to "dvd-rom" for the Verbatim DVD+R DL disk as shown by DVD Info Pro. I didn't tweak any settings when setting up the burn, so Nero must have automatically done the booktype setting.

Good luck.

Unfortunately I wasn't successful with my 2004 TSX and the new 3.60 NAV DVD (Orange Label). I also used Nero and a DVD+R DL but the NAV did not like the disc when I put it in the drive (I checked the disc on my PC and it definately wrote all the files properly). It is possible that the DVD drives in the 2004 TSX are different than what is in the 2006 and the 2004 drives can't read a DVD+R DL disc. I guess I could try a DVD-R DL to see if it makes a difference.

George,
It's also possible that the new disks have some type of copy protection that would require some different back-up steps. I can only speak to the disk I have, and will try to back up my new disk when it becomes available for me to buy in the coming week(s).

Another issue could be that I got lucky with the Acura unit "liking" Verbatim media. Every so often, a certain brand won't work in certain players. It gets frustrating as experimenting with dual layer disks can become pricey when making coasters.

Good luck.

I guess that is possible. BTW, I tried a Verbatim brand DVD-R DL just now and it didn't work either.

Has anyone successfully backed up a Orange NAV DVD for a 2004 TSX? If so, what were your steps you used in backing it up?

George, I used DVD Decrypter to backup my disc. I used verbatim dvd+r DL media as well. You don't have to change any settings in DVD Decrypter, you just have to choose to write the Navi disc to an .iso file then you can use Nero to burn the iso. In Decrypter, choose mode > iso > read. DVD Decrypter itself could also burn the disc by choosing mode > iso > write.

And like lando622 said, the media itself matters sometimes.

Just to rule it out.....If you are questioning whether the DVD ROM drive reads dual layer or not, you can check quickly and easily by popping the Navi Disc in your computer and check the amount of data on the disc. If its more than 4.3GB then its a dual layer disc and you'll know the DVD rom drive reads dual layer. You can check this by right clicking on your dvd drive and selecting properties. I'm guessing its dual layer though, those maps are a ton of data.

Quick Reply: Navi DVD and software is updated!!!
