Important info about the compact spare, and then some.

For those who drive the 6MT and haven't read the owners manual, don't put the compact spare on the drive wheels.

It's amazing how things fall into play....

I took the vehicle in for wheel repair as I fell victim to a black ice, and put the doughnut spare on the front wheel until I get my wheel back.

Then as I was driving, I noticed some excessive gear whine. I got nervous and looked in the owners manual, and surprise, it states to not drive long distances with the doughnut on the front wheels, as it will damage the LSD. I knew to keep the speed under 50MPH with the doughnut, but.....

Good thing I went in and read the owners manual....

So I headed off to a local tire shop to have them move the doughnut to the rear, and as I get out of the car at the tire shop, I hear a hissing noise. I'm greeted by a frickin rusted bolt imbedded onto my rear tire. (My tire was still full at this time.)

The bolt went in so far that it went in one end and came out the other, so it was not repairable....

I don't know if this is good luck or bad luck... If this happened somewhere else, I would've been screwed.....

Stupid OEMs cost me 250 dollars including labor. Why the hell is the OEM tire so frickin expensive.

Now my TPMS shows "SYSTEM FUNCTION ERROR" but I hope it stops bitching as soon as I put the stock wheel back on.....

I love "unexpected expenditures" don't you?

It says right on the tire that it's good to 50 MPH or 50 miles....I've always known that as the general rule for half spares...so what's the "LSD"?

So you purchased two new OEM tires? Why not just buy a whole new set for a bit more?

It says LSD (Limited Slip Differential) for 6MT only on the owners manual. (At least for 2007 model)

I didn't know that the TSX 6MT came with LSD (or does it?) but it says right there on the compact spare tire section, unless if it is a typo. Anyone with a 2007 TSX can check the manual... I was surprised also.

I bought one tire.... (wanted to do two to be even but...) The rest of the tire is fine, but I'll just ride the OEM's until they wear, and replace them with the not so ripoff ones...

If I knew the stock tires were so frickin expensive, I probably would've forked over for the tire/wheel insurance when I bought the car.... Just FYI.

This is true of the TL. I'm 90% sure that it is not an option on the TSX.

I'd love to be proven wrong here. I can tell you for sure that my 04 6mt does not have one. There's a very narrow and steep road right behind my pass that I will always stop at the bottom of if another car is coming down. I have to move over as far as possible to let the other car by. This often means my right tire is sitting on a good bit of gravel and dead leaves. Trying to get moving again on that steep hill with one tire having little traction is usually an obnoxious affair replete with tire spinning. I'm seriously considering dropping in an aftermarket LSD when the funds permit.

I believe that quaife makes one for the tsx

Also, if you have the 5at, turn VSA off if the spare is on the drive wheels.

TSX does not come with LSD. Neither AT or 6MT. Doesn't matter what year. Must be a typo in the owner's manual.

How do the aftermarket LSD's work? Anybody know good brands? Or is this something in another thread I could find out about? (wasn't able to do a search for "LSD"...)

I'm almost positive there is no LSD. I remember when I was reading through the manual and got all excited when I read about the "LSD" on the car-- until I remembered the tech specs, which clearly don't have one... Seem to recall somebody here mentioning that typo then as well.

^^It was discussed before and said it was a printing error in the manual.
If Quaife makes an after market one, that would be a good one to have.

I've always been taught that if you have to use a spare tire, you never put it on the drive wheels, be it front or rear wheel drive (unless it is a full size wheel). I've had a front tire go on me on my VW GTi 16v and I put the rear on the front and the donut on the rear. Guess I assumed that everyone knew.

^^ Agreed, it only takes a few minutes to change an additional tire and it is worth it for the safety.

would you do that if you were to get a flat tire on a busy highway such as 95 near washington dc. it is easier to be done in say your driveway otherwise change it quickly and then drive to a safe location and put the donut on the rear.

I've been on I-95 in DC and many other very busy highways throughtout the NE. I guess you have to ask yourself, if it isn't safe to do it right, then it probaly isn't safe to do it at all. It would be a lot safer to just get AAA and/or call an officer until you can make it safe. Here in Cincinnati, there is a 1 mile stretch of road where I would feel uncomfortable. However, I've never had an explosive flat. I had one blow out, but I could drive on it for a little bit longer until I could pull off to a safe location and it was raining too, so going the quick route would've helped. But I knew I would be driving over 40 miles the next day to get a new tire. Besides, The additional 10 mins to do the quick swap isn't that much longer if you know you will be doing a bit of mileage on the donut. If you are going 10-15 miles and are truly going to keep the speed down, I suppose your differential won't suffer.
