Crash Test: More good news for TSX, Bad news For Mazda 3.

Acura TSX, Lexus ES330 lead four-door sedans in crash tests
DETROIT -- The Acura TSX and Lexus ES330 have received the government’s highest ratings in three out of four crash-test categories to stand out among all 2004 model year four-door sedans.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which released the test results Thursday, said sedans “generally tested well.”
Both the Acura TSX and Lexus ES330 received five stars in the frontal driver, frontal passenger and side driver categories. Both got four stars in the side rear passenger category.
Side-impact air bags come standard on both cars.
The Mazda 3 and Suzuki Forenza received the lowest scores of the group, including three stars for both side-impact categories. Both vehicles received four stars in both front-impact categories.
The other four-door sedans tested were the Acura 3.5 RL; Chevrolet Aveo, Aveo Hatchback and Malibu; Hyundai Elantra, Elantra Wagon and XG350; Kia Optima; Lincoln LS; Mazda RX-8; Suzuki Aerio and Aerio Wagon; and Toyota Camry, Prius and Scion.
Both Aveo models got five-star ratings in frontal crash tests and had not been tested in side-impact crashes.
The Elantra coupe got five stars in frontal driver and side driver tests. while the XG350 got five stars in frontal driver and frontal passenger tests. The Lincoln LS received five stars in frontal driver and side rear passenger tests.
When the NHTSA tests frontal collisions, crash-test dummies are placed in driver and front passenger seats and secured with seat belts. Vehicles are crashed into a fixed barrier at 35 mph.
In frontal tests, a five-star rating means there is a 10 percent or less chance of sustaining a serious injury in a similar crash. A four-star rating indicates there is an 11 percent to 20 percent likelihood and a three-star rating means there is a 21 percent to 35 percent chance.
For testing side-impact collisions, crash-test dummies are buckled into driver seats and rear, left-side passenger seats. Then a sled weighing 3,015 pounds and moving 38.5 mph slams into the driver’s side to simulate an intersection-type accident.
In side-impact tests, a five-star rating means there is a 5 percent or less chance of sustaining a serious injury in a similar crash. A four-star rating indicates there is an 6 percent to 10 percent likelihood and a three-star rating means there is a 11 percent to 20 percent chance.

I'm definately happy with the TSX's saftey performance so far. I take it all with a grain of salt though, because it doesnt tell the whole story. I still say there should be "suv" tests because there is a difference between a 3,000 lb sled hitting your door at 2 feet off the ground, and a 5,000 lb sled hitting your door window.
I'm also very surprised at the poor showing from the Mazda 3. This car has gotten nothing but praise by everyone, but now there is finally a kink in the armor.

Mazda3 is listed under Compact 2004.
For comparison, the Civic did better and it had the same side impact score with and without side airbags.
