Should I buy this TSX?

it has 136k miles on it. premium pearl white. the passenger door lock doesnt work. paint chips on rear bumper and front lip although he says he's going to fix it up if i buy. it is a 2005 and has navigation system

i have not owned a car before, this will be my first.

he is asking for 10,700 and he says he's going to lower it to 10,500 only.

when i put the car into kbb it suggested the price as 9,800
http://www.kbb.com/acura/tsx/2005-ac...=private-party

what do you guys think?

and I forgot to mention. he does has aftermarket rims on it so I'm guessing he does drive his car hard? will that effect the car in the longer run?

I would say it's overpriced to begin with. I would try to find a car that has everything in working order. The paint chip thing, you will probably find that to some extent on any car although more on the front bumper than the rear. As far as the wheels go, aftermarket doesn't necessarily mean he's driven it hard. You can ask for maintenance receipts, or take it in to a dealer for a used car inspection, etc. Personally, I think you would be better off looking around some more.

I notice your age is 17..are you negotiating this deal all on your own? Be careful, I'm 23 and some salesperson tried to pull a fast one on me.

Whats your price range? I believe you can do alot better. Do you have a trade in or money down to work with? 136k is a lot but its also a Honda so they'll last but 2004,05 TSXs are known to be problematic. If you can, go for an 06 or later.

this is just a used car tip in general.

When you're buying a used car, make sure you have some money stashed away for repairs. It's almost impossible to find a used car in PERFECT working condition. Buying a used car is like buying someone else's problems.

if i were in your shoes, i'd start searching for cars listed as 8k, 9k, or 10k.. haggle it down to a lower price and used the extra money for the repairs.

sticker price on my TL (also my first car) was 6000 and the dealer wanted 7000 out the door, after a couple days negotiation (basically walking out because we didn't like the price he offered us) we ended up paying 5200 out the door.

I would suggest you keep looking-which includes other brands including the honda civic, ford focus, hyundai elantra. You can get newer models with less mileage with those cars.
Make sure to have the cars checked out, including what service has been done, carfax, etc. Good luck and safe driving. Remember to include car insurance, maintenance costs, gas in your cost.

thanks for all the helpful tips guys. I have emailed him offering 8k which he will most likely turn down the offer but o well. I think I will keep searching for tsxs since I really like how it looks and its a sedan which I like.

what do u guys think about low mileage taxation that have a salvage title?

This.

There is no point even contemplating how much to pay for this (or any pre-owned/non-cpo) car until you have it inspected and it checks out.

Although a salvage title car may seem like a good deal (and it may be) I would strongly advise you to stay away. Typically the money saved is not worth the hassle the car may cause you and most people will shy away from these cars when it comes time for you to sell it.

I don't know how soon you need the car but I would suggest to keep on looking and be patient.

I started looking for a TSX in the spring(March)... did not find one I liked that was in good shape until September.

Ran into LOTS of TSX's with rebuilt titles, usually the "cheaper" priced ones.

Good luck!

As your parents are giving you the money, that is telling me you won't have money to cover alot of expensive repairs. I realize that you are 17 and want to have a awesome car, but you'll have time for that when you are older.

Do what nj2pa2nc recommends and get yourself a newer Civic, Elantra, Focus etc. This will get you out of college if you are planning on going with very little repair costs on things like CV boots, mufflers, alternators etc which are high cost items that will go with older cars. That 2005 TSX is 7 - 7 1/2 years old at the moment so there are going to be repairs needed sooner or later.

I'd use Cars.com to look around. I see you're in Fresno. Let me tell you, there are TSX's all over LA (yeah I know its a bit of a drive) with less miles for about the same price. My TSX had 153,000 and I paid $8500 at a dealer. This guy wants $2200 more for a car with about 2200 less miles? I don't think its worth that.

I bought my tsx 06 in modesto, CA. 122k miles for 12k..now I look back, was that too much? Probably, at a perfect world I hoped I would have gotten it for 11k then it would be more reasonable. But the car was spotless inside and out, regular minor paint chips but the rest is clean and have no problems mechanically (*knock on wood). Then i had to repair my fog lights, they were cracked as is, new battery, replaced brake fluid, power steering fluid, replaced rear brakes and rear rotors..all very minor stuff..all cost me little over 500 to bring it back to worry free condition..its almost a rare find for 06 tsx in that price range, or maybe i'm just trying to justify myself..haha..btw i got this at a dealer, not private..

Do you like the car then just enjoy it-too late for wondering if the price was too high. I own a 06 tsx-will be needing new tires and rear brakes soon. Enjoy=safe driving
