There are a lot of factors involved with back pain. Sitting posture is only one of the factors, and you might be one of the lucky ones who never gets low back pain even if you aren't sitting in the best position for your back.

Studies have shown that there is approximately 40% more pressure on the discs in sitting compared to standing, and if you lean forward while sitting, the pressure increases even more. By elevating your knees above your hips, your pelvis is in relatively the same position (with respect to your low back) as it would be if you lean slightly forward while sitting.

So, to answer your question about damaging your back, maybe. To be more specific: are you putting unnecessary stress on your discs by sitting that way? Yes. Will it definitely cause you back pain at some time in the future? No. But, over time, it could increase the likelihood that you will have back problems.

Hope this helps!

Are you noticing the pain only when you're driving, or does it happen at other times, like when you're watching tv or something? Mine's been bothering me constantly lately. Maybe you're doing something else in your daily life that is causing your troubles.

Things will be different for everyone, but I have done 7-hours straight in the seat driving up I-95 and the car was phenomenal in every possible way. I got out of it feeling refreshed and ready to go. So, for those having problems, take a good 30 minutes to an hour and adjust your seat until you find a comfortable position.

I have a similar problem - I am also on the shorter side (5'8") and find the "base-ie without pushing the lever" lumbar support feels rather high, and arches my back in a weird way. I ahve an aeron chair atwork, and set the lumber support on that to a much lower postion. I've found it's more uncomfortable on shorter rides, and on longer rides I get used to it, though I continually adjust the lever-lumber (drove 4 hrs straight yesterday with no problem). I was extremely uncomfortable at first and, like an earlier poster, was thinking I made a mistake, but after 1500 miles I've gotten used to it.

Drove to Ottawa and back on Sunday (2 hours each way), and was very comfortable! Always use the lumbar support: it felt weird at first, but really keeps your back arched properly... the only thing I wish I could change would be for the seat back to be a bit taller, and that the shoulder bolsters be a bit wider (adjustable would be better).

For spirited driving, it is fine, with both hands on the steering wheel, but on long freeway stints, i'd like to be able to rest my shoulders back against the seat, but can't... OK, I'm 6'2", with wide enough shoulders, so most cars seem to have this problem for me...
