Price to replace alternator?

My little brother has a 95or96 TL and needs a new alternator. He told me they want $700 to fix it for him. The part cant be anymore than $200 thats over $400 labor!? Have any of you recently had an alternator go out? What was the price you guys paid to replace your alternator/install?

have you even looked at the placement of the alternator? is it a 2.5 or 3.2? if its the 2.5 do it yourself its not hard.. you can get a alternator for under 100 used

I dont know, Im in St. Louis he's in Chicago. I've never seen the thing. I think its a 2.5
I told him to call around and find a re-furbished one. He said Autozone would sell him one for $200 ($280-$80 core) The guy still wants $450 to install and change out the belts. Is it really a $450 job?

For a 2.5 alternator used around my area it only cost $56 and the alternator should be too hard to do as Andrew said.

this thread reminds me of a funny story.

Friend of mine went to Autozone to buy an alternator for his TL. There's was another guy who was hanging around in the store, probably was a customer, asked my friend if he needed some one to install it. After talking, the guy installed it for $20.00... while he was parked at Autozone's parking lot.

i got a re manufactured one, which was about the same price as rewinding at a local shop. I think total parts/labour was under 400 cash...but don't quote me on that as it's been a while. good luck

edit: you lucky bastard

I have seen a few "stand by's" in the Autozone/Advance Auto parking lots. They are ready to assist for a fee.

Have not tried them, but could come in handy...cash transaction though.

That's why I would rather do it myself...but on some issues, you will need a pro!

Alternator replacement is not hard. The directions are pretty straightforward.
