Posting for a friend: 1998 TL, Tach sits at 3000 RPM and barely moves

My friends 1998 TL has a problem with the Tach. When you start the car it shows the RPM at around 3000 but the engine is idling normally. The car runs and drives normally but the tachometer is always around 3000rpm. If in neutral and you rev it up a bit the needle will rise a bit to about 3250 then drop back down to 3000.

Anybody have any suggestions as to what's up?

Cheers

Mine did that at cruising speed on the freeway- 95 freeway/5 city. (did not pay attention to city driving as I wasn't at a constant speed)

Fast forward a few months - not trying to scare you, transmission busted. Could just be coincidence. I have a AV6 in there now for 10K miles. no problems

Had a similar experience and it was the VSS. Cheap part, fast fix.

Hi!
Do you know if anybody disassemble the dashboard? seems like a tachometer only the problem... The tachometer have got a coil in the inside, check the coil if it not burned (With a ohmeter or multimeter).

(Sorry for my english)
