Dunno about the oil burning. I bought a 98 3.2 recently with 255k miles on it and it doesn't burn anything. Maybe it does but I haven't noticed anything significant that I need to worry about..

Both motors get way less mileage than the VTEC 3.2's so is VTEC AND 5speed auto help that much or were there other changes that were made as far as injection etc? Would doing Platinum/Iridium plugs with synthetic oil and whatever else help? Other than a light foot, what are you guys with good mpg's doing passed having a light foot...lol?
Completely different motors and 4 speed transmission vs 5 speed. C series are heavy and bulky engines compared to later year J series 3.2L. I use regular plugs and premium gas from Chevron only. average around 20 MPG with a lot of city driving and taking hilly road with a lot of ups and downs to work.. I am heavy on gas pedal most of the time..

In the last week, I made one trip from Roseburg, Oregon to Eugene, and two trips to Portland.

I averaged 21 to and from Eugene. 23 on the first Portland trip, and 25 on the second.

I just get crappy mpg in town.

Thank you for explaining the different motors. I noticed how coarse the 5 cyl sounded.

As for your mileage in Oregon. Were there a lot of elevation changes? Are you guess using cruise control? I tend to use CC immediately after reaching speed and id use the buttons to slow/speed up rather than use my foot.

That's a G-series motor. C's are quiet and smooth, especially the C35 with its balance shaft. I had times where I forgot my motor was idling, and that's even with my intake/exhaust.

~Cheers~

It almost feels like a V8 at times.

Para: The J series has less reciprocating mass, less friction and the five rations in the transmission certainly contributes to the better gas mileage.

For a brief comparison, here is what my three TLs got on average on the freeway.

'97 TL = 26 mpg
'03 TL = 31 mpg
'05 TL = 29 mpg

Legends with a 6 MT would get high 20's, so clearly the extra gear ratios help. Its all about friction and keeping the RPMs low

Roseburg to Eugene is horrible, rough, hilly, winding freeway. Past Eugene is beautiful. Flat and smooth. I set the cruise between 70 and 75. Until it gets crowded. I have the climate control set on Auto, so the a/c compressor is usually going.
