Its an "idiot gauge" with a lot of extra room.
I think the most i've ever pumped is 15.5 gallons and that is REALLY pushing it.

When the light goes on empty you have exactly 3 gallons left in the tank. My car is guaranteed to go 200 miles on 14 gallons. (All LA traffic). I always reset my trip to 0 that way i know exactly how many miles I have left.
