Refinishing the Aluminum Rims

Hey Everyone,

So the other day I washed my car and noticed that I had a little bit of corrosion on one of my wheels. I took a little bit of steel wool and knocked down the corrosion. Afterwards, I suspected that along with removing the corrosion, I removed a protective clear coat, so I called Acura and asked. So, I just sprayed some clear coat spray on top of the spots I hit with the steel wool (about two coats worth). Has anyone had experience refinishing their rims? Does this sound like a good way to do it?

Thanks!

^^ If you desire to refinish your rims to repaint them...then there are other steps to be done first.
1) use a paint stripper such as a product called jasco. follow those instructions to remove all old paint.
2) rewash with soap. dry
3) you should have bare metal rims at this point. Now is the time to remove any curb rash and scuffs.{Most time consuming part is this}
Start with roughly 200-400 sand paper. This is used to remove scuffs/curb rash. keep the wheel wet in entire process. Progressively move from 400/800/1200/1600/2000 grit sand paper. 2000 is final prep step to smooth out any surfaces.
4) Wash thoroughly. Let dry 100%
5) Spray Primer on rims. Primer with filler may be ideal. 2-3 coats for best paint adhesion
6) Spray Paint onto Rims.

This is a guide in a nutshell. Patience is key.
From experience Dupli-color products in a rattle can would appease most individuals.

Rustoleum makes a special spray paint for alloy rims. I just did my son's 2002 RL rims with it and the above techniques. They look great and are holding up well.

Still here! I suppose I just haven't been checking in as often, or feel like I can't help on some of these posts. Just washed the RL this evening actually!
