So to my understanding, there is no way of fabricating our own AUX port on models w/ NAV?

Yes there is.

You will need to open up the cd changer. On the circuit board is printed the wiring pinout. I believe the acura 8 pin is the same as alpines 8 pin with 2 cables reversed. There are wiring diagrams of this online.

So basically you use that wiring diagram and the printed circuit boards to make your own jumper harness.

It's not that hard but it takes time and some double checking of the wiring. I've been planning on doing this however I've been slacking

Do you think a harness on the CD changer would render it useless? Or would if still be functional as long as the jumper isn't on? Maybe some sort of switch to turn an AUX port on and off? Not sure i'm going to look for those diagrams now, I'd like to tackle this soon.

Would this work with a 98 3.5RL + 6 cd changer in trunk with no nav? I was considering buying a whole head unit + the new head unit cover but that totals to over $500, this would be a nice quick fix while I save up the money.

It should work. I have put this in a 99 and 02 RL (non-nav) with no problem.

Is there any place I can obtain the plastic head cover that comes in this kit? http://www.beatsonicusa.com/stereo/s...ic-hsa-11.html

I would buy the harness from you if I could find that plastic for a decent price.

How much would you sell+ship the AUX unit for? I haven't bought it yet.

Are you referring to the dash kit where you put in your aftermarket head unit? That is the only company made that dash cover, it is a lots of $$$ if you ask me. I had to custom made the dash kit from my OEM one and it save me ton of money It's pretty easy to do it. If you decide to put in an aftermarket HU, I can show you how to make the dash for it.
35$ shipped for the AUX.
45$ shipped for the aftermarket to OEM AMP harness( new, I haven't installed or cut the wires yet, still in box)

Yeah, it's a great car. I've had mine since '98 and it only has 44k miles on it

As an update to my earlier posts, I've been using the CD changer iPod adapter for about 5 months now and I love it. It was a bit of a pain to install since it was hard to get it to fit behind the radio in the compartment but it was worth it. Sounds great.

My only complaint is that when you don't have an audio source connected to it and you have your radio set to the CD input, you hear a "beep... beep... beep... beep... beep" through the speakers until you plug your source into the jack. Gets quite annoying sometimes, but eventually you get used to just turning the radio off every time you get out of the car.

Aux output locations

I found this post because I was thinking of putting the aux like you did....any regrets...I would like to have one that was retractable or something or maybe come out of the bottom of the coin holder...any thoughts?

I think you would regret doing what was done in that image since you'll be staring at it all the time and it's an ugly wire coming right out the center of the console... so I would not do it that way. What most people do (and what I did) is route the cord out through the gap between the right sidepanel (i.e. passenger side) of the center console and the glovebox area and then let it run across the floor and around to the back of the center console. I've also seem some people route it through the center console and drill a hole for it to come out inside the console armrest compartment... but that's a lot of work for an AUX cable if you ask me.

I personally routed it around the passenger side as I just described and have no regrets with that.

How do you get the wood grain piece around the shifter off? I'm worried about breaking it if I pull too hard. Are there any screws to remove?

Rl w/nav

For those of us with the navigation model, we are cursed with ancient 16 pin harnesses that do not allow the installation of many radios or aux solutions.

I found some alternatives.

1. If you want to keep the original stereo, amazon has the isimple fm modulator for around $20 that allows you to hook up an aux input and play music on a radio channel. Modulators are different than transmitters in that they are a wired connection and should eliminate white noise.

2. If you want to install a new stereo with an aux input such as the sony xplod which is $20 on amazon, you will need to purchase the Metra 70 1720 wiring harness. You can then plug the 16 pin harness from the car to it, and then splice the wires into the new stereo harness. I recommend doing the splicing before you put the new stereo in.

I hope this helps those of you with nav setups.

I just got myself a 1998 Acura 3.5 RL handed down to me from my grandma and it looks like this is the only option available now that the PIA is discontinued if I don't want to spring for a double din deck. I realise this is reviving a super old thread but is this the right part and would it be worth it for the price now considering I am in Canada and it would cost me about $120 to get the whole thing going considering there seem to be cheap Chinese double din decks with touch screens and backup cameras for just a bit more?

Don't know what to go about doing but the tape to 3.5mm jack I got gives off a hum that I can't hear at all with music but with podcasts it is most definitely there and I would rather get the most out of this system as I can. I can order the adaptor here or go for a double din deck. I really couldn't care less about having all the bells and whistles of a double din deck as my phone does it all and a straight line to the stereo would be just fine with me, but it sure it going to be expensive for simple AUX input as I would have to get that part and then also buy an RCA to female 3.5mm jack. I would probably glue the female portion of it into a hole drilled out in the centre console as there is no function to the middle button.

If any of you are still around what are your thoughts?

Hi, why you don't install the aux input in your trunk?
It's very easy to remove the Cd Changer and connect the aux to that connector in the trunk.
You only need a longer RCA cable.

Kind regards,
