Thumbs up Aftermarket stereo for RL, is it possible?

I'm looking into getting an RL and was wondering, how easy it is to replace the headunit with an aftermarket one? I noticed on crutchfield.com they offered NOTHING! I was looking into possibly a double din eclipse with 7" screen or excelon....... Any pics , is it possible? even just an aftermarket headunit?!

Also, will 02+ CL or TL rims fit on a 96-99 RL? Thanks for all your help!

Yes, you can do an aftermarket stereo, just use a Metra dashkit.

And yes, the rims will fit.

No Metra does not have dash kit for the RL's, nor does anyone else. You'll have to make a custom trim.

I made a custom kit using fiberglass resin. I first made a wood mold of what I wanted and used that to make the fiberglass kit. Turned out okay, but don't know how to make the factory amps work with an aftermarket receiver. Really haven't looked at the amps that much yet. Maybe in the near future.

Abmwrider, you will have to modify the unit or make a custom trim in order for the CL deck to fit. How much is the Pioneer Navi unit?

The Pioneer (AVIC N1)was $1500 from tweeter but could be found for considerably less elsewhere.

Would the CL HU be plug and play except for the faceplate?

Has anybody rigged up an Ipod to the stock head unit on the 1st gen RL? Crutchfield says it's possible to buy a wired FM transmitter that plugs into the stock head unit. Anyone done this or know if it's compatible with the stock navi?

Matty,

read from the bottom up....Apparently, you can buy a thing that plugs into the back of the head unit where the 6 disc changer plugs into. so you can unplug the 6 disc changer and instead put in a ipod jack.
which is this...http://www.logjamelectronics.com/piehonaux.html

I'm not electronically apt so im not sure if i asked the right questions or not but i tried. from what i gathered, the Cus. serv. rep is telling me that if you buy this $50 plug, you just unplug the changer and plug the ipod jack in.(you will not be able to use the 6 disc changer)

then i wondered about the steering control, if i can use the steering control...and i think he said yes...

I really wish someone would buy this and try it out and tell me how it works....I might but not for a while yet.....check it out and lemme know what you think.

Yes, you can control the iPOD with just this connector. Nothing else is required.

"What if the 'Hokie Pokie' is what its all about?"

ME QUESTION:
Can i control the Ipod with just this connector or do i have to buy another adapter on top of this for the ipod controls to work on the ipod.?i'm fine with not being able to use the factory deck to control my ipod but would want to be able to control the ipod using ipod controls..

LOG JAM ELECTRONICS RESPONSE:

Hi David:
The HON-AUX is an auxiliary input converter that allows audio from any device to be directly connected to the factory radio. It is not an iPOD interface and does not allow you쟴o control쟴he iPOD from the factory radio nor does it charge the iPOD. All of your existing factory radio controls will continue to work as normal. Sound quality is as good as the audio on the device you will be playing it on.

QUESTION
Hi.
?/div>
I want to purchase this AUX input converter ($50)쟣or my 2000 Acura RL 3.5, without Navi to use my Ipod Nano but i need to ask some questions first.?
?/div>
Will the Ipod be in "drone" mode?
Will the ipod charge?
Will I be able to use the "original" factory controls? as well as on steering wheel?
What kind of sound quality would I be getting?
I'd really appreciate your help.?Thank you.

Very cool, I remember the CL had something like this called blitzsafe. It actually worked with the navi, but this apparently won't (my RL is a 2002 with navi). This is from their website..

For Acura:
# All models from 1992-2001
except
1996 & up NSX
any RL w/navigation
1996 & up SLX
1999-2003 3.2TL
2001-2004 MDX.

I've spent enough on the tires tonight anyway..

RL aftermaket stereo

To answer your question yes it is possible but you will have to make the kit yourself as everyone has stated. For some this my be too much of a pain in the butt while others might see it as a challenge. If you are handy with tools it is fairly easy but time consuming. For the 99 - 2002 you can use a dash kit from a 2000 Jeep Gand Cherokee. The top arch will fit in place but you will have create the bottom straight edge with ABS plastic. Also the front face of this kit will have to be grinded flat & reconstructed using ABS (belt sander is very helpful here, just take your time. I used a combination of CS glue & a soldering iron. To mount it in place you have to cut the tabs on the kit & set them in a stagger pattern a the factory holes & glue together one piece at a time the strengthen by melting plastic around the area. After evrything is test fitted sand lightly apply a tin coat of bondo repair from Home Depot (stronger than regular bondo). Smooth out and paint with flat black or plastic specific black. I have a picture of finished product if someone can tell me how to post it

This is an upgrade I recently performed in my 97 non navi rl. Unit is from an 01 rl. I have the setup from the 97 rl for sale if anyone is interested. Complete unit including custom wiring harness & custom aftermarket dash kit. Hard disk based.

Just wondering what you all think..

What's the best option for putting an Ipod on an RL stock headunit with navigation and the 6 disc changer, taking into account sound quality and neatness? I'd rather not have to ditch all the factory equipment. Any suggestions? Sadly, I don't think I'm handy enough to build the kit that are in those pics a few posts above in that 97 RL.

Hmm.. FM transmitter or tape deck?

I know neither is of the best quality but it'll take some serious work with the headunit to do much else.

Yeah that's what sucks about the RL head unit. Are both about equal or is the tape better (that's what I've been told)?

Matt,

from personal experience, I think neither is worth the investment. I've tried the griffin ipod road trip and tape. I thought they were both horse$hit! I returned them both.

try it yourself. I bought'em both at Best buy and returned it and got refund for both the next week.
