2003 RL 246k mi Tar like drops on oil filter

Anyone getting these tar marks on their oil filter? They're hard. Cannot be removed by cloth.

I was reading another forum and some people seem to get the same tar like drops on their garage floor. Some say it is the crankshaft position sensor, or something like that, melting, but apparently nobody experiences malfunctions relating to these, and apparently some dealers say that though this stuff oozes out the sensor still works fine.

I've had these tar like drops once in a while for at least 100k miles.

P.S. Might as well post all my RL issues. Great car though. 246 miles with few issues.

Hi

They are from the camshaft position sensor there is one on each side. The insulating material melts doesnot seem to affect the sensor

Thanks Babafats. I think you are right. Now that you mentioned it I looked back at the photos I took when I changed the timing belt two years ago. I think I see some tar like substance seeping on the right side of the crankshaft. Isn't that where the crankshaft position sensor is?
