Why RDX=Midsize SUV while CRV=Mini CUV ?

All the car reviews I have seen called the CRV a mini CUV while the RDX gets a Midsize rating. I don't get it. Yes it is a few hunderd kg heavier then a CRV but really it is the same vehicle with different trim and running gear. So why the different category ? Doesn't this rating also effect the insurance rates ?

Interesting. I'd have considered both to be compact/sub-midsize.

because the EPA classifies things by the passenger compartment volume, while magz and websites classify things by market segment.

for example, the m35/m45 is considered a "large car" (same class as S-class and 7-series by EPA standards), but the market segment is the midsize luxury class and competes with other midsizers in the class.

this may affect insurance rates depending on the criteria the insurance company uses, which vary from company to company. Some base rates more on the replacement cost of the car, some base it more on the power, some base it more on market segment and theft rating. Some even base it on how many doors the car has, and charge higher rates for coupes. So unless you know the exact way the company rates cars, no one can say whether the size class affects rates or not.
