Replacement airbag recall. (Re-recall?)
Saw this mentioned on Jalopnik today: some of the replacement Takata airbags are being recalled now, and it looks like *some* first gen RDXs are on the list.
I ran my VIN through their recall check and it says I'm clear but I'll probably try again a couple times just to be sure. |
My 1st gen RDX needed new airbag. Dealership did it for free.

So far I'm not on the list either...seems Takata took a step backwards and is just injecting water into the build process instead of waiting for it to seep in over several years.

Our VIN’s won’t come up until April, when they announce the recall for the replacement air bags that will probably kill us in a crash too 💀. It’s nice to know that after ten years mines a 2009 they still are giving us air bags that will kill us ☠️. |
Yup, this is not enjoyable. For what it's worth, I entered my wife's VIN into the database as well and her 2007 Acura RDX did not show up. I guess we will have to keep checking periodically until our vehicles show up. This is scary stuff.

I ran my 07 RDX VIN yesterday and it didn't show up either.
Back in Oct 2016, the airbag in my 06 TL fortunately worked very well. Don't think that vehicle had ever had the recall replacement. |
I was told April they would be starinbrg the recalls as the parts become available. My vin didn’t show up either yet... https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/acurazi...8dfef6c57.jpeg Coming soon, to a horror movie 🎥 🍿 theater 🎭 near you! Explosion 💥 on the Takata air bags, you shut us down we kill your customers 💀! |
can you in more detail explain how the passenger side air bag deploys? I do not understand the plastic cover over the top. where is this cover? is thsi under the vinyl dashboard and does the vinyl dashboard open up when the air bag s deployed? I am guessing is has to.

This is what happened:
The airbags go bad after many years and moisture gets in them. At the time of the original recall, redesigned parts were not readily available - so Honda swapped in a new original spec "bad" airbag. The reasoning was as a stopgap - but installing new airbags that are of the original design, they would be safe long enough for the redesigned airbag to be ready. So, the 1st recall was installing a new airbag that is safe for time being (but is still that bad design that will go bad) , and the 2nd is installing a new airbag that is final. |
